Wanted to see how many people have made a paint booth at home using whatever. I am in the process of doing my own and wanted some ideas
This the one you are talking about:
Portable garage

Anyone used this as a paint booth? I've read you need special fans with sealed motors or the paint fumes can cause an explosion
True?

that IS true. if youve ever used a power tool youve seen the arcs inside the motor.....those sparks can ignite the fumes

Interesting!
I'm sure a sealed fan is going to be pretty pricey. But, damn don't want to die for this, lol.
Anyone have info on sealed fans (mainly price)? Hell, can get 2 box fans from Wal-Mart for about $20

why would you use power tools under paint fume wtf ?
i've painted many cars in garage like this without any fans and they came out alright.
My paint gun doesn't make any sparks btw

ok...let me rephrase. i used the power tools as a for instance since its something i know weve all seen spark while it runs. its the same principal...a brush motor. can u get away with using a basic box fan from walmart? probably. your box fan will be used as an exhaust fan and it will be pulling out fumes. probably a safe bet for home, not safe for work. i work in paint and this is just my OSHA training talking.

or how about installing a fan on top of one. Eh? eh? A cut out on the roof, then put a fan in it's place since the fumes probably like to travel upwards anyway. Just an idea. I dunno.

yeah "explosion proof" (I thought it was funny name) fans are a bit of an investment compared to ye olde wal mart fan

After doing some googleing of "paint booth fire" there are lots of people saying the risk of a flash fire is not worth the money saved on buying a cheap box fan.
There was some advice I read in my quick searching that as long as the air doesn't blow across the motor you could be in luck. So if you could separate the fan and the motor with a belt or gearing perhaps you could save some money.

doesn't even seem like you'd have room to work around a car in one of these booths.
what about painting in just a garage with the doors closed...or maybe just popped a few inches to let a lil bit of air in. that's how i painted my car...it's a 3 car garage though...and it didn't go KABOOOM!

I'm with you.
We painted several cars and bikes in my old garage. It was so thick in there that you couldnt see from one end of the garage to the other. It was a 2 car side by side garage. The air compressor (with electric motor) sat in the corner running full blast, we had a box fan setup to vent into the attic (rental house), the furnace and hot water heater sat in the corner (think pilot light), and for the last of our stupid human tricks, we used a lighter to light the paint on fire as it came out of the gun... a somewhat home made flame thrower. Guess what? I am still posting here today.. eye brows and all.
Would I recommend those activities? Not really, but we were young and dumb. it should be proof enough that you dont need to worry about an electric arc from a brush motor blowing up your house. The only time we were able to get the paint to ignite was when it came directly out of the gun. Once it was airborne and dried into a dust (which doesnt take long), it didnt do anything.
I know I know... I'm an idiot. I've heard it before.

yeah someone should start a SAFETY thread in the paint and body...proper masks and stuff... </TD></TR></TABLE>
I bought a respirator after the 4th or 5th paint job. Sealer coat is harsh and colored boogers for the lose! Just think, if I hadnt lived with such a crazy *** room mate, I would have never experienced all these wonderful things

when you say canister style filters, do you mean the ones shaped very similar to a tobacco dip can?... picture???
i've been wondering what type of mask is suitable for painting and fiberglassing.

The masks are a good idea. I was going to approach a well known painter in my area to do my car, but the poor guy quit painting because he got throat cancer from not ever wearing protection.
