Help ITR Suspension - coilovers - factory or aftermarket?
Hey guys, I did some searching but haven't really come up with a solid answer here and could use some help.
I bought a 98 ITR a little while ago, the previous owner did quite a bit of modding to it that I have had to fix up over time to make the car a daily driver and the beast that it should be
The car was lowered with neuspeed lowering springs, I beleive 1.75" in the front ind 1.5" in the rear. Now, as I figured would happen, one of my struts blew and I have a feeling the rest are pretty close to that point.
So I called up my acura dealership, they want 2000 to install the factory springs/struts for all 4 wheels. 1100 for parts 900 for labor... I figure for that price I can get a full aftermarket coilover but I have no idea what to get or if I should stick to the factory stuff.
So should I get the factory stuff put back on or are there aftermarket parts in that price range that will perform better than the OEM parts on a daily driver type of car? Keep the springs and get some struts designed for the car being lowered?
Thanks

Welcome to the world of ITR and congrats on getting a dream car that everyone wants.
The factory suspension is a fine tune of art for the car, however I wanted a lower and more aggrieve ride, so I got after market full cover coil over suspension. There are a ton of other ways you can go beside the stock suspension, such as what you have on your car right not. Like struts, springs, coil-overs, full cover coil overs, and more. Remember to just do your homework for what you want.
Personally I would not pay 2000 for a brand new stock suspension and put them on myself. There are a lot of choices out their far as brands.

Depends on what you are going to do with the car. I would go with either a GC/Koni or GC/Bilstein combo. You can't really go wrong with either of those and it won't cost nearly as much as a new OEM setup.
Personally though, I feel the suspension as it is is too low and too bumpy.
I'm pretty sure all that was done was the lowering springs. I ended up putting a camber kit on the rear so I could get it aligned right.
I've had it long enough that I stop before the concrete parking stops and all that, the lip hasn't taken much damage
My main concern though is getting a ride that is a little less bumpy and handles about the same, I would really prefer a higher ride height though. Roads around here are horrible and I don't want to damage the car. If I hit a good bump right now it makes me cringe

GC/Koni was one of the options I was considering.
I guess my main concern is, the hype of the factory suspension. Will a GC/Koni setup handle better than the factory setup?

Are you tracking or autocrossing your R? If not I wouldn't concern myself with handling so much.

Well no, but if a better setup is cheaper then why not go for it?
I just like to do a lot of research before I do anything to the car... better safe than sorry

You can buy a set of used ITR shocks/spring for around $150. How is that for price? I do agree that $2000 installed is nuts for stock suspension.
Look up in the FS thread at the top of the forum if you haven't already. You may find something in there.

I would go with a PIC suspension this is a very cost effective coilover system that allows you to control ride height and dampning if you do take it to the track you can stiffen the ride up and its simple.
