Default How are generic coilovers so much different from name brand coilovers?

My brother wants to put a set of coilovers on his Si HB. He doesn't autocross, race, or do anything of the sort. So I told him to just pick up a set of the cheaper coilovers (Matrix, Arospeed, etc.) that you can get on ebay. Is this a good idea? Keep in mind that they would be more for looks that for performance. Thanks.

..bad idea...cheap coil overs have sickeningly stiff spring rates...cheap sleeves that split..and perches that get stuck...
