93 Accord EX-R Cam Seals Busted Contemplating H22a Swap
Hello all,
I'm here because I'm not proficient in swapping engines. But I have a mechanic who would be willing to, and I have a possible engine...
Recently my left cam seal ruptured and oil went everywhere. Now I have to get my timing belt changed, cam seals replaced, water pump, etc etc, costing me about 1000 dollars. However, I have a guy who has a h22a engine with "no bottom" but it isn't seized, comes with everything but the tranny for 700 dollars. Seeing as my mechanic has to take the engine out to change the seals, i was tempted to buy this engine and swap. i'm really in need of help here because i don't know much about engine tuning etc but i don't want to make an irrational decision. what are the issues with swapping the h22a into an accord? does the f22 tranny work on h22a? is it worth buying the h22a without a bottom and tranny, or i may as well buy one for 3 with all the parts?
any help is appreciated, i'm going on the basis that there is no such thing as a stupid question, haha.

what exactly do you mean by "no bottom"?
if you mean all you have is the head then your friend is high on crack, if it's just missing the oil pan, then it's a decent buy depending on engine condition.
are you driving an auto or manual?

"Seeing as my mechanic has to take the engine out to change the seals"
HUH? WHAT?
What kind of Honda mechanic pulls the engine to replace cam seals?
I'd trust that guy just about as far as I could throw him.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that your from canada, since you have an EX-R. If your in ontario, and in the GTA, stop by my shop and i can have a look.
From what you say a couple things dont make sense. The cam seal is on the left side of the engine, and the timing belt is on the right. I dont see how a leaking cam seal will ruin your timing belt and water pump.
Second, an H22A is a japanese motor. Just so you know. The H22A1 is the motor in the usdm preluds.
Third, if by "no bottom" you mean, its just a head, or bare block, its not worth it. by the time you buy a crank, rods, pistons, bearings, oil pump, water pump, oil pan etc etc, you'll be into way too much money.
Forth, The motor does not need to come out to do cam seals or a timing belt. However, if you do choose to swap the motor, the H series engines will bolt up to your stock trans.
If your in the GTA, swing by my shop, i'll see if I can do something for ya. I'm at the Richmond Heights Firestone, its at Yonge and Elgin Mills

Hey guys thanks a lot for your help. i'm just going to get everything replaced, rather than buying half of an engine... heres whats happening..
The guy said "the h22 engine has no bottom or transmission, but it isn't seized." why would this engine not have a "bottom"? he wasn't specific and wouldn't really tell me what it was. My car is an auto too btw.
. My mechanic told me THE SPECS: The water pump is leaking, balance shaft seal popped out causing oil to spill everywhere, cam seals and crank seal are deteriorating, the timing belt and balance shaft belt were covered in oil from that so i'm getting those changed. valve cover gaskets, grommets and spark plug tube seals are getting changed... hes gonna check the valves too.. soooo i dunno i might just buy a prelude eventually rather than swapping. hes doing all that and an oil change for 650 bones with parts and labour... He already replaced my front bearings and such...
BUT AGAIN... Thank you for your words. i'll keep an eye on this forum and ask around if i ever plan on modding. What I might do is just aim for the 2001 prelude and buy that when the time comes. for now just drive this car as long as i can and keep it up.
Unfortunately i'm not in ontario... i'm located in edmonton, alberta.
