5th Gen: AUTO to MANUAL Swap Help!
Hi, new poster here but long time reader...
Recently, my 5th gen's automatic transmission essentially blew up. I've talked to a few mechanics to getting this fixed, but it seems the project will run me well over 1,000$ for either a rebuild or new transmission. I figured, if it was going to cost me this much, I'd rather do a Manual tranny swap.
As far as the parts go, I've concluded that the general parts required would be the actual transmission, clutch pedal, gearbox, and ECU. I'm not very familiar with transmission swaps at all, but someone did recommend this to me and it sounded very interesting.
In the past, I've read threads where people have changed the transmission on the 5th gen Prelude's, but I can't seem to find any existing threads now. What I'd like to know is, what would you guys recommend? Rebuild/Replace the existing auto-transmission? Or go for the swap? (I'd suspect, swapping would have the majority's vote!)
I'd also like to know exactly what is needed for the swap (as far as the parts go)? Approximately how many hours of labor should it take? Where is a good place to find the transmission and parts itself? (I've heard JDM transmissions should be pretty easy to find) And finally, if anyone has actually done the swap, I'd like to know how the process went!
With all this being said, I'd like to give my thanks in advance to anyone who can even partially answer me
It's been real stressful and expensive thus far, so I'm looking for the cheapest method with the best quality results!
