Default I need definitive answers on OEM LSD problems and rebuild

The archives have given me about 20 different answers regarding the OEM LSD malfunction and rebuild and I hope to get definite answers here. Im trying to find out if an OEM LSD can go bad over time, or if its just something that works, or doesnt work. Then I need to know if it can be rebuilt and whats involved in the rebuild. I am trying to dianose some issues and need to rule out the LSD, hopefully.

Most seem to say it either works or it doesnt. But some people say it can be something that worsens over time. What are the signs of an OEM LSD going bad (if there are any)? I know mine is still working (at least partially) since I can do 2nd gear burnouts from a roll and see two rubber streaks on the road in my mirror.

Secondly, what is involved in rebuilding an OEM LSD? I dont want to crack mine open without having a good idea of what is involved in fixing or refreshing it. Ive seen the long post with the Quaife LSD rebuild but I dont know if the process is the same with the OEM LSD.

Yes they can be rebuilt.

Contact user Rene M, he used to get rebuilt ones for $300. They may still do that.

Oh, and check the tires first, it's probably just the pressure is low...

Jack up the front of your car and spin one of the front tires...the other front tire should spin in the opposite direction. I'm assuming this won't happen if the LSD has failed.

I just checked Baranco site and didnt see that they sold the internal pieces seperately. Whay not just open it and check for extremely worn/broken/fractures in the pieces.

Thanks for the diagram. Too bad my trans is already out of the car. Im curious what the effects would be while driving for an out of service limit on the rotating torque check.

I'm curious too, although that check seems to say that the idea of it either works or doesnt, is not exactly true.

exactly. and if its not working properly, what are the symptoms and what parts are replaced. I assume there are some guts in there but I never saw the inside of one and dont want to crack mine open til I know.

i think that, by doing what the manual says, you just make sure that the LSD works as a differential, and not specifically as a Limited Slip Differential..

From my short experience if you jack up the car in neutral, and you rotate the one wheel, the other will rotate in the same direction (if you have lsd) and in the opposite if you dont. Is that correct? Can anyone verify it?

No, that is incorrect. ITR lsd will spin in opposite directions. Clutch pack/welded diff will spin in the same direction.
