Default which cams to buy

basically, i have a 2000 civic si with ls/v tec. i had my mind set on just ctr cams when i built the motor but now im thinking of a few other options. the car is a daily driver and im very picky about it. im not buildin the car to be a streight out race car. the only reason i built an ls/vtec is cause i blew my bottom end and had the ls bottom end laying around. i am running itr piston, and valve springs, every thing else is off the b16. also rod bolts and studs. i want to stay in the itr vavle spring set up. what do u guys think.
here are all the cams ive been looking into. not looking to spend over 600
ctr oem
skunk 2 stage 1
buddy club 3
brian crower stage 2

I have had very good experiences with the Skunk2 Stage 1's.

I had them in my B16, and loved them.

Blox cams are nice too. Same as skunk2, and under 600.

The Skunk2 Stage 1's are not so radical that the ITR valvetrain cannot support them.

Keep the revs conservative.

my redline is 8800 but i dont push it that much

...and not make as much power. OR you could spend the whoppin $250-300 bucks for good valvetrain and rev to where your car makes power. Turn around and sell your type r valvetrain for $150 and you've got a fatty $150 bucks out of your pocket. But no, that makes too much sense.

so where exactly do u think my car is going to make power. lets see the car is a DAILY DRIVER, and its also an ls/vtec,. last that i heard 8500 to 8800 rpm on this motor was a little high. i guess i should just get springs and retainers and rev to 9000, that really sound good.

but thanks agian d-rob for ur imput i think the skunk2s are what im going to go with

I seen valves bind at revs less than 8500 rpm. Do a search for B-series valves springs thread. There's a good write up on stock valve spring capabilities, and several aftermarket brands. That's what made me decide to ditch my itr vavlespring combo for some supertechs.

Skunk2 Stage 1's will peak at like, 7800 RPM on an engine like the OP's.

I wouldn't say he'd be "not making as much power."

Agreed, valvetrain prices really are so low these days that everyone should be able to scrounge together the funds for a good setup.

But, that wasn't the question. He asked which cams he should buy, I recommended a cam I had good experience with, and simply stated the fact that the Stage 1's need not valvetrain upgrade unless revving beyond the factory rev limit.

Funny, mine goes to 8800-9000 RPM daily...

i guess what i am trying to say is that a dd should be reliable

and revving that motor so high like that is anything but that

If he wants a realiable DD then some blox Type A cams will be well under $400 and with the extra money some supertech, or RM valves springs for $150, that's realiable and still under his $600 budget.

You DO realize the cams are 100% the exact copies of the Skunk2's, right?

Let's see here...

If two sets of cams share identical lift and duration specs...

They make the same power!

What a brilliant deduction!

You're a ******* tool, irregardless of your agreement with me on the cam choice for the OP.

wow, I'm surprised noone recommends the BC3+. There are some dynos of them floating around OWNING the S2S1 all the way up to like 7800 rpms. The Skunks made a couple more up top but the BC3+ cam dominated through most RPM's. Either way, I would recommend a better valvetrain. If I use my BC3+ (I may go bigger), I'll be using ITR outers and portflow inners that I bought from JHP a while back. Good luck.

True.

I did not suggest the BC3+'s, simply because I have no personal experience with them.

But yes, I have seen many dynos proving what you're saying.
