Default 97 3.2TL reliable???

So I am thinking about buying a 1997 3.2TL w/ 87k miles. everything looks like it has been taken care of very well... Just curious if there are any known issues to look for. Thanks

auto transmission is the major weakness of the car.

yea I saw people saying that about the 99-03? TL's, but didnt see anything about the 96-98. it has 87k miles on it and seems to drive and shift great.... any signs of it going bad? (never owned an automatic before)

EDIT: I just a big article...some LA times or something.... the transmission issues started in 99 or 2000 when they switched from the 4 speed to the 5 speed automatic. sooooo i really hope that holds true b/c I dont want to replace a transmission. thanks for the pointer.

The 96-98 3.2 TL trannys were pretty good, WAY less problems than the 99-03's. Probably the biggest things these cars are known for is various oil leaks and EGR ports clogging which leads to a check engine light. The 96-97's have an emissions warranty extension, so any check engine light related repair is covered under warranty up to 150k (unless it was somehow caused by the customer, crash damage, flood etc).

yea, Kenso is correct, mine shifts fine, a tiny bit jerky sometimes. This other guy on the TL forums, 235k mi. on his OEM tranny, he drives it like its stolen, tracks it, launches it, and it still runs very nice. I haven't had any problems with my 96 3.2TL with 107k on it besides the ABS crapping out on me.

awesome guys....really good to hear positive words....

next question to those that own this body style. where the hell do you find preformace parts. all im really looking for is shocks /springs and maybe a lip.... cant find crap. want to keep it simple and comfortable..but i hate stock cars.

I have been out of the import scene a few years.

only thing there is is a Legend intake, lip - gotta get JDM or something, shocks/springs, look it up on acurazine.com since some people mix accord/Legend stuff on it, exhaust - custom, Legend OBX headers fit fine also.

My boy has a 1997 Acura 3.2TL and it now has 240k. He bought it with 30k and has beat on it since he has bought it. He never has had any serious problems with it. I have heard of problems with the transmissions but not with that year acura. Even with 240k the tranny does not slip what so ever.

Awesome... the dealer is replacing the VSS (speed sensor) so I couldnt pick her up today.... but tomorrow early afternoon...she's all mine.

I'd like to put some new TL wheels on it... the stock 5 spoke 17's... but they're +45mm offset and i believe this TL is supposed to have +38mm. think I could get some small spacers?

Ill need somebody that can photochop soon... its white.....need a simple drop ( less than 2") and those new TL wheels

thanks for the info guys...

time to sell the e36 bmw... $2k!!!

I think you'll have to have the wheels bored out slightly to fit over the older TL hubs, other than that they should work ok I believe.
