Default how wide can a wheel be and still fit a 96-00 civic

i own a 99 honda civic and i really like the deep dish/big lip look...sport max wheels make a 18x9in rim which has a 3in lip. can you guys give me advice on whether or not it will fit my car (car not lowered). also what size tire would fit that rim and which manufacturer. Any feedback on offset, size, width, tires etc. would be really appreciated. thanks.

18's on a 6th generation Civic will look terrible. It's not an SUV, and they really look out of place. The common aftermarket wheel sizes people go for, are from 15" - 16". Not to mention you don't have any suspension modification, so the 18's would stick out even more. You won't be able to run 9" wide rims on your car, without body modification to cover the excess wheel. The widest I've seen without excessive body modification is 8", and they were 15x8 +28's. You could probably fit 15x6.5 +16's for a deep dish appearance, but I would recommend thinking about a suspension drop before that. Any aftermarket wheel you get, will not look great until you lower the car.

I agree completly!

One thing is that 18 should never been on a 6 gen or lower civic.

On more practical issues, another problem with 18" wheels is tires. The smallest commonly available 18" tire size is 215/35-18. That's somewhat larger in diameter than your stock tire size (by just over 2 percent) and it might rub. Also, with large wheels and very short sidewalls, there is a much greater tendency for wheels to get damaged by potholes and such. My recommendation is to stick with 15" (195/55-15 or 205/50-15 tires) or 16" (205/45-16 or 215/45-16), but if you MUST go bigger than that, do not go bigger than 17" (205/40-17).
