Count the pedals on the drivers floor board.
2 pedals means it's an automatic
3 pedals means it is a 5speed.
open the hood and you should be able to find a sticker that will say WHAT YEAR the car is.

anybody ever have any stories of flushing their tranny and having the transmission slipping problem go away? damn..i dunno if i wanna spend 2.7k for a car that's valued at around 8k =/

I put 100K on my tranny by changing 2 quarts of tranny fluid every time I changed oil. After about 3-5K, the tranny would start to slip again. I milked it for 2.5-3 years like this.
I used the synthetic dextron mercron at the auto parts store. I have no idea if it is "the best" or not - it is just what I used. You could also install a magnetic plug if you don't have one already. If it gets full of shavings, then your tranny will not be long lived.
My new tranny cost $1900 about a month ago in my 92 - money well spent since the rest of the car runs great. It is really cheap when we haven't had a car payment in 13 years on this thing and I can probably get another 5 out of it.

i would check a RECCOMENDED auto recycler if you want to swap the tranny. i dont know how much different the 5th gen is with the 6th gen as far as pricing but i got a tranny with 5k miles on it for my 5th gen for 650 and 200 to install it (i lucked out on the maintenance)
