Default Rear str8 axle

I'm looking into buying a str8 rear axle...from what i've heard it mainly for drag racing and drops weight by about 60lbs...anyone know where to buy one? and would this be ok for very light street duty? would you be able to put 16x7 wheels on?? its not a big concern i'm just wondering... the car will be a weekend drag car but very very light street driving...i was told that regular wheels wont fit because how its made. Thanks for your help

Which straight axle are you looking at? My Ken's axle dropped maybe 30 lbs after I cut the subframe out and you could NOT run anything other than skinnies with it.

If it is a street driven car I would leave it alone.

i remember when MB sold their straight axle they claimed it dropped 80lbs. first off both trailing arms with brake assemblies dont weigh 80lbs combined. now if you added the struts, springs and rear tires that might save you 80lbs total, i think thats even pushing it.

I remember MB (?) the guys who used to sell the one piece front ends, hatches and doors--used to advertise a narrowed drag rear end that saved around 60-70 lbs. It wasn't a straight axle, but it converted the double wishbone/trailing arm suspension into a strut suspension--used a different lower control arm, no upper arm, and a thin tubular trailing arm (you ditched the original OEM trailing arm). The strut performed location duties. It was a whole package with their own hub bearings and disc brakes.

I have never driven a Honda with an aftermarket straight axle, but I would imagine it is strictly for straight line racing only. Its not worth it at all if you are still going to be doing "some" street driving.

thats the ones. they made that IRS and the straight axle both. i believe your right 60lbs or so from the IRS and 80 from the straight.

There was a time in early 2000, when I almost got the "narrow" one piece front end to drive on the street with---I was going to cut out holes for headlights. Thank goodness I never did that!

the guy (matt) i got my MB front end from had a 1 piece on his street driven CRX. i guess that old white coupe that used to be advertised (MMR) along with MBs product was also his at one point.

Matt's CRX--if its the one I am thinking of, was so awesome!! He had the one pice front with exposed headlights and the bottom painted black to match the stock CRX sideskirts--and the rest of the car was silver--is that right? I heard he also had a 180 whp d16z6 NA setup. Do you have any pics of the exterior and engine bay of that car?

thats the one. i never saw pics. i remember talking to him about his car. he put down 190 or so with that SOHC. he said his car might have appeared street legal but his gf at the time could pick up the rear of the car. it was somewhere around the 1700lb range if i remember correctly. this was like 5 yrs ago or more.
