August 20-22, 2004 there was an Honda Challenge race at MidOhio, where the east coast, west coast, and midwest HC series all got together for the first time. It was sponsored by GSport, a division of Mr. Gasket.

Those who were there would remember that there was video coverage of the event, which was produced by Effect Industries. Thanks to those of you who contributed your personal in-car tapes, or agreed to run one of our cameras in your car.

A rough-cut, unfinished 23 minute TV spot was put together, but it was never put to use. It features pre-race interviews, practice and qualifying footage, and race coverage. Yes, it includes video evidence of the controversial events of that race. Yay.

Well late is better than never, and after digging it up and watching it recently, we would like to share it. I hope you enjoy the cheesy MXC-style commentary!

First time I've ever laid eyes on "The Contact" between Ryan and Andy. I know this has been beaten to death for two and a half years since in happened, but...

Andy: That was a textbook example of a dive-bomb pass. Yeah, you were even with Ryan when he turned in on you, so shame on him. But you shouldn't have been there, so shame on you. With any other driver you might have gotten away with it.

I spoke with Effect about this before, he said he finished the job and gave the finished product to GSport, but never heard from them about it again.

 

Is GSport still around? I think some people didn't like being "forced" to run the windshield banners for the race.

This is bitter sweet for me. I finally get to see the video, but am also reminded that I blew my engine in qualifying. Oh well, at least there was about 5 seconds of my car before the actual race footage

 

Some one should talk to Speed Channal about airing this video. Once a year will be just like the runoffs but for NASA.
