Default 02 Honda Accord EX V6 Buying Advice

Hello one and all.

Been seeing the trouble that 6Gen Accords have with transmissions although it seems Honda did not cover the transmission in the 2002 model year with the extended warranty.

My question: I am looking at buying a used 02 EX V6 w/ 65K. Drove it and it shifted smoothly in all gears. However with the tranny trouble in the 00 & 01 should I be worried? What changes did Honda make in the 02 tranny?

I plan on taking it to a Honda specialist before I purchase. Also, spoke w/ a rep @ American Honda to check the VIN for recalls. None existed for this particular car.

I really dig this car and this would be the 6th Honda between my wife and I. I usually don't buy extended warranties but this one's got me thinking. Any advice would be appreciated

Its really a gamble. I dont know the specifics on what they changed but I dont think its gonna help much.

I have a 98 with 127k and it drives ok. Not the greatest but I also havent been babying it.

They are really nice cars but their weakness really kills them. You'll have to watch out for the alternators as well. They come with Delphi units that like to go out very quick.

In the '02' trans the differential bearings have been changed back to a ball roller bearing.
they also changed the accumulator body, and a couple other minor changes in the guts of the trans.
I wouldn't worry so much about that 02 trans as the older ones; 98-01 you couldn't chase me fast enough to Give me one. LOL

Thanks hondadude. That kinda eases my mind.

Any other particulars about this model year I should worry about?

Legendaryyaj:

Hope your 98 gives you a lot more years. I have a 92 Accord EX Station Wagon w/ 240K on it (this is the vehicle I'm replacing). I bought it 6-7 years ago with 140K on it for $3000. It crapped its tranny @200K but my 99 Ford Expedition crapped its tranny a month earlier. The difference: The Ford had just over 100K on it. After that I swore an oath to Honda and promised to never stray off the reservation again. Buying two transmissions within 2 months is not cool thus the due diligence.

i own the 4cly version automatic. its at 93k and ive had it since 72k. Ive replaced the front rotors because of warping.................thats it......nothing else. Given i take good care of her but i do beat on it regularly. As for the trany ive collected alot of opionions on it and I havnt heard of any trouble. Ive even test drove a 01 v6 auto tranny and the shift noises and horrific down shifting were some of the most bizzare ive ever experienced in any vehicle. I also know of someone who just bought the 02 v6automatic with around 85k on it and she says it rides perfectly. If i were you id go for it

My friend had this model and the tranny blew at 75k. I dont know if its because he drove it too hard or whatever and i havent heard of that since...but still, something to keep in mind

Thanks and I do hope that my car lasts me for awhile. I love my car and it still looks nice and not outdated. Ive treid updating it to keep it up to date as much as possible with these new cars out.

As for swearing to Honda and disliking Ford, the two have dealings together believe it or not. The instrument sluster is made by Ford and its sucks. My gas needle is off and doesnt light up. The tranny was supposedly built or helped built by Ford as well. I could be wrong though on that.
