Default ~Header/Manifold temperatures~

Hello... i was just discussing the issue of NA heat temperatures on our header/manifold with a friend. We both searched and couldn't come up with anything specific.

Obviously the temps are going to fluctuate from the use of daily driving to HPDEs/Autocross. Just out of curiousity, does anyone know what a NA B-series header/manifold is capable of reaching with regard to temperature. The header in specific is a jdm ITR 4-1.

I apologize if this isn't the correct location for such a post, but it made the most sense to post where others may be trying to guage such a variable and IMO that was here. Thank you for you input

When I had my turbo on my B16, my EGT gauge read tempurates of 800' while idling, and in excess of 1300' when on the freeway @ about 75mph. It gets hotter than most people think. I had a few nights where it was glowing red after taking a few passes.

See i would have to think that NA and boosted cars temperature would vary significantly. That turbo gets damn hott, which is going to transfer heat to anything bolted to it.

I had my egt tapped 1" from the head and it read 800C at WOT and around 400C at idle. (turbo car)

Mine was tapped in an almost exact location into the manifold. Cast greddy manifold actually. I'm not sure how you could get only 800 degrees @ WOT

That's Celsius, which is almost 1500 Fahrenheit.

I have a JDM ITR 4-1 header with an electric EGT. It's tapped about 1" from the head, where the primary is still coming straight out. It's steady at about 800 F at idle and can climb up to around 1450 F under WOT. The engine is a GS-R with bolt ons and CTR cams.

What benefit does an NA motor have in monitoring EGT besides during ignition tuning?

EGTs rise under knocking conditions.

Not only can you tell if you are lean, you can tell if you have knock if you know what you are looking at.. .

You can probably spot pre-ignition as well if you log your data along with realtime knock counts.. .

I've sene NA race motors run EGTs on all cylinders - maybe overkill but thats how a race team gets better - information

When I got the EGT, the car had a 100 shot of nitrous on it and I wanted to see what was going on. But now, for a relatively mild NA motor like mine, I'm not using it to tune anything. It's just still there.
