with any kind of springs other than OEM that are shorter (read: coilovers) your ride will be MUCH more bouncier, even at stock height, thus greatly increasing the chances of your chocks bottoming out. When it's lowered, it's almost a sure bet that any little bump or hole will give you a nice big THUMP.
it's not necessary. but it should be.

Your stockers at a 2" drop will start to give out in about 5-6 months (or sooner if you drive like your in SCCA) By the 7th month, the stock shocks will be really sheety. You can save up and upgrade the shocks in a few months, when the stockers die, or just do it now and keep the stocks for when you sell it. With lowing springs or coilovers on stock shocks you will have a bouncy ride (and unhappy rear seat passengers) until you upgrade the shocks.... not unbearable, but bouncy. edit

No factory shocks are designed to operate properly when lowered that much...
They will be Bouncy, and die very quickly...
Do it right, or don't do it at all.
