SFWD - What are you doing for insurance?
Wanted to see what the SFWD guys were doing for insurance.
I'm in NJ, and all of the agencies kind of suck. I don't drive the car on the street more than ~2500 miles a year, and was looking at a collector's policy, but most carriers require the car to be older than 15 years old.
Any and all input/help is much appreciated

Do a search under my name I made the same post last year. I had this problem last year b/c someone reported me to my insurance company and they dropped me. I never really got a good answer.
When I searched previous to this post, I saw your old post Chad, did you ever get everything straightened out?

just go to your insurance company and get collision only. No point in full coverage, your parts are not covered nor is wrecking at the track so it just saves money every month. Dont tell them what they dont need to know.
My insurance company doesn't require pictures of the vehicle because we have been with them for so long. Try and find an insurance company that doesn't take pictures of the vehicle.
i think u guys are missing what hes going for here, he wants to get coverage for his aftermarket parts. ie if the car gets stolen he doesnt want them to cut him a check to 2k when they should be cutting a check to 20k. i already contacted my insurance company and told them the deal, i have a car with aftermarket upgrades including engine upgrades. they said i would need to get it appriased and they would work with me. i go through usaa military only, but they said that if i got that coverage they would be going through progressive.

here is what i found on race car insurace. obviously they dont cover it when its on the track but this is the only thing that even sounded like they would cover something that wasnt a "classic".

Progressive guy came verified the parts I said I have on my car(pics and varified purchase orders). You can get extra coverage for aftermarket parts, but nothing is covers if it happens at the track. But.... if you were on your way to the track or leaving the track (hint hint) and something happens then its covered. My insurance guy told me its just a show car and they have carshows and most car races

Thanks to everyone for the replies.
I'd like to drive the car on the street, I'm not so much concerned with something unfortunate happening at the track as with theft and/or an accident on the street. Additionally, the whole inspection-exempt piece of the collector car status is great as well.
Pretty much, the situation is, with my integra, I have 3 cars on my policy. Naturally, I'd like to save some money being I won't be driving the integra even semi-regularly, just wanted to see what options there were with something like that. SFWD regulations say nothing about insurance, so essentially as long as you have insurance when you register it, you can take it off insurance and keep the plates, but I'd rather not be fraudulent about it y'know. I haven't even brought up the purpose of the car with my insurance company, as far as they know it's bone stock.
Unfortunately, Parish won't insure in the state of NJ.
Does anyone know for certain, if something did happen at the track, would I be covered for bodily injury with a standard insurance company?
Axle, I will call CCR first thing tomorrow morning, thanks for the heads-up

If you insure the car and register it then drop the insurance the DMV DOES find out because the insurance companies by law have to notify the DMV. in turn you will receive a 200 dollar fine for not carrying state minimum liability auto insurance on the vehicle. if you dont pay they cancel the reg and still hit you with the fine if not take further actions.
Case in point register and insure the car with the cheapest insurance possible. If you want the car covered for theft then you need to insure it liek you would insure jewelery or something of that nature to cover the monitary values. Auto insurance will NOT cover anything that is not factory or stated in the insurance. Most companies will also only cover up to 2000 dollars worth of aftermarket equipment and all receipts must be maintained and its very limited to what they will cover

Not true in IL for sure. My car goes off of insurance every winter and i havn't heard a word. Then again, our DMV is so screwed up that i don't even get paperwork to renew my plates so who knows.

I worked as an Insurance Agent for 7 years, just because they didn't get you right away doesn't mean anything. I have seen people get letters after 5 or more years JUST when the DMV ran an Insurance Verification and found out then. Now if your car was stored and you advised the DMV that and in your state it is OK then sure you can do that as long as your Insurance company will do it every year. Alot of Insurance Companies will not put it on then take it off then put it on again.
Also guys besides getting a fine from the state most states will also SUSPEND your license for Lapse of Liability Insurance. Liability is what the state REQUIRES, they don't care if you have Physical Damage coverage on your car which is Comprehensive and Collision, this is required by the banks if you have a loan on your car still.
Also MOST people out there don't realize their license is even suspended, from Lapse of Insurance or any other reasons like not appearing to court and paying fines for tickets and other such. DMV's always state they send the notices BUT most people state they never got them, you will find out when you get stopped by the police though.

Weird since I worked for USAA for 5 years left there in September 2005 and my wife left there just last year. We never once heard of anything being underwritten by Progressive for the company, they may have started after we left. One thing is USAA asked you the question point blank "Do you race your vehicle or participate in any racing activities?" If you say yes they won't insure the vehicle at all, if you lied then you can be denied a claim.
Funny thing is they had one race they would cover, some race for the Air Force Academy I think it was that they had once a year.

Meh, my dad has been doing it for 15 years on his Belvedere and has heard nothing. My uncle is the same way with a few of his cars. I'm not too concerned.

LOL, once again I have dealt with MANY MANY MANY cases where the DMV doesn't catch up to people till years later. I have had people cry to me on the phone since they didn't have insurance for just a couple of days BUT now their license is suspended and they have huge fines and now insurance is even more expensive. Again most states REQUIRE insurance if your car is registered. I am only giving good advice seriously.
Just an interesting fact is in MD, they have an MVA Motor Vehicle Administration, for the first 30 days of lapsed(no) insurance coverage it is a flat fee of like $150 or $250 then after that they charge PER DAY!!!! WOW! I had a customer owing on the THOUSANDS to the state of MD.
Also a friend of mine here in VA when he was like 18 years old bought a car, the car dealer let him buy the car and provided him with Physical Damage Coverage which is only COmprehensive and Collision which is what the bank requires, He did NOT provide him with Liability coverage. He got it like a week later. Well 5-6 years later he gets a letter from VA DMV, "Provide proof of insurance from This date to this date. If there was no coverage there will be a fine of $500 uninsured motorists fee for that time and also suspend your license." He could not provide the info since he did not have the coverage and sure enough they suspended his license and required him to have an SR-22 which is something your insurance has to file with the state when you are insured, it usuallly is much more expensive from teh insurance company as well because they will usuallu put you into a Non Standard(high risk) insurance company placement.
I have also looked at gettong coverage for my race car, very slim there are very slim options out there actually and most have drawbacks. I cover my car for Liability and Physical damage, I do not drive on the street at all. I would never even ATTEMPT to make a small or petty claim, most likely only a large TOTAL LOSS if it was a theft but that is about it.
