Default down shifting problem

i have a 94 accord. now, say, if I'm comming to a red light, i slow down to the point of almost stopping, but wheels never actually stop rolling, and the light turns green before i get to stop, my car won't let me down shift to first gear. but if i stay in second gear, the car will rumble a lot and pull off extremely slow. is this normal? what should i do in this situation?

First gear was not synchronised perfectly even when these cars were brand new.

As many miles as you have on the car by now (I'm assuming), you're just going to have to develop a technique and driving style that accommodates the needs of the old car.

Even my 2006 6-6 Coupe doesn't synchronise first perfectly in the conditions you described, if that helps you feel better.

you could go out and spend 5-10 grand rebuilding the tranny from scratch and install double synchros.

With the H series tranny I can't shift into 1st above 20 MPH if I held the stick against first untill it allowed me to shift into gear, although over time it's gotten worse and worse, it's to the point now where sometimes I can't shift in to first untill I'm at a dead stop, and even then it gives me a little trouble now.

That car was winning races with close to 300,000 miles on the motor and transmission.

Yeah, you might be able to get a little better syncro action in first if you break it open and and break it apart to rebuild it. You might be able to get a ltitle better performance by replacing the gearbox with one that has fewer miles on it.

You're the person who's going to have to decide whether or not it's too bad to deal with.

But, frankly, a notchy, balky first gear engagement at low speeds (five mph) has always been a problem for these cars, even brand new ones.

I cannot feel what you're feeling, but if it's like what I would feel with first gear in my '94 Accord or like what I feel now with my '06 Accord, it's just something I would resolve to deal with as a mark of the breed.

i don't have all that money to spend so i guess i'll just deal with it. i just think that it makes it seem like i don't know what i'm doin when the whole car starts rumblin like that because I'm pulling off from 3 mph in second gear

Have you tried blipping the throttle a bit as you start to move the shift lever into 1st?

double-clutch, as it was told to me, is when you are downshifting, put it in neutral, press the gas pedal to rev the engine up a bit, then take your foot off the gas and complete the rest of the shift. it has to be done rather quickly or it really has no effect. on my Z, my u-joints are going out and my differential is in need of some fluid (and a few other things) so i have a large clunk if i do it wrong.

Sum it up:
1. clutch in - go to neutral
2. clutch out, gas in and rev engine up (doesnt have to be too high, but a conservative amount would be just about where it would go when you downshift)
3. gas out - clutch in - downshift. make sure you get the shift done while the RPMs are still up.
4. hopefully end up easily in first.
