Not really. You just need a Snell '95 or newer helmet and a car that will pass safety inspection. Then you go to an event and enter it. It's simple.
These are all the local clubs:

Here's the SCCA Solo rulebook: http://www.scca.com/_FileLibra...s.pdf
Show up at an event and plenty of people will be willing to help you get started, provided you are humble and willing to take advice.

not sure about a "career"
yah, some guys get paid and sponsored of course. but it's definitely not on the level of Club Racing. definitely not as popular crowd wise.
your best bet is to get a car and start running all the events you can. try and ride along with the fast guys. sign up for all the Autox Schools in your area. they are usually a single day and not too expensive. you get alot of seat time.
it's definitely alot of fun though. i think it's a very difficult form of racing. not in a monetary, or danger sense.
but you show up , walk the course once or twice, and then you have 4 or 5 runs to try and dominate. you have to make so many descisions in a short amount of time. messing up one turn can destroy your speed and line into the next turn as it's just 20 yards ahead.
that isn't the case on road courses. most have been around a long time so people know the course blindfolded, you can constantly improve on a set "layout"
some people even sell videos of the best lines for certain road courses. i know there is one for a local track here "summit point"
and my friend has a video game that has the entire layout of VIR. (not sure the name, i'm Video game illiterate)
A friend that graduated skip barber school and raced in the series said the game was 100% accurate in every detail. he won his races there even though it was his first time actually driving on the course. he had just spent so much time on the video game "simulator" that he learned all the lines without ever setting foot there

no career in auto x, maybe you meant you want to be a club racer and become a big name someday if youre good enough.
I want to be a real amateur racer one day, but Im realistic and it wont be a career to me ever since the pro drivers start out at a young age and most have a lot of $$$.
