Default Looking @ a Prelude SH

Hey guys, I'm looking to get a Prelude SH as a daily car and I was wondering if they have any major tranny or motor problems. Also if i decide to chip/dyno tune it and do an intake(a quality one, not some ebay junk) what kind of numbers am I looking as over stock?

Also I read something about a VTEC tuner type of thing, is that the same as the chip or can you tune the VTEC independently of the rest of the motor?

I'm more of a suspention guy but I know that no matter what car I get I'll want to make it more peppy eventually.

Thanks guys!

Make sure it was properly maintained, timing belt ect.

My advice is to read the prelude Faq's. That will answer most of your questions on intake/suspension choice and way more.

Changing the vtec engagment point only is a bad idea( you will learn why this is). Learn what vtec is and how it operates.

you cant "chip" an SH, nor would you want to "chip" any car. Make sure what ever prelude your looking at has had its 100k service by now, even if it doesnt have 100k on the clock, its been almost 7 years since they went out of production which is the other interval they require the 100k service at. FYI the SH more of a beotch to tune because you must retain your stock ECU for the ATTS system to function.

I have never heard of WANTING a car to be ODBI, cant you just use the ODBII port to flash the PCM?

Jesus, seems like chip companies need to really get caught up with the times.

Quit hating

The Prelude SH is great for car for a daily driver. It is friendly to light mods.
However if you have plans for heavy mods (>250whp) you might want to consider a base model Prelude. Preludes are great cars either way.

I plan to sink most the money into suspension, I don't plan more then an intake and tune for the car, maybe a good clutch/flywheel and shifter later down the road.

Greddy Emanage is the best option we are able to use with the SH and retain the ATTS to tune fyi. You will see that when buying suspension bits for your SH they will say "except SH" this is bs, dont believe it. To use aftermarket gear you must swap out both strut and spring at the same time, you cant use aftermarket spring w/ stock strut or aftermarket strut with stock spring. So just get both and you are golden.

Thanks, I planned to do both @ the same time anyway, no use in tearing it all apart twice.

I had a 2000 SH dropped on Tein SS. The only problem I had with it was the cv boots, they kept ripping. So if the car had suspension mods I would definitely check them out. Other than that, the SH is a great car for light mods/dding. ATTS is very sensitive.

Good luck!

P.S. - some old pics:

Save that $200 towards a quality intake and use it towards the suspension. A quality suspension ride along with ATTS, makes for an amazing daily driver. Slap a K&N drop-in and call it a day, IMO.

How long do the motors typically last? Most of the ones I have seen are round 90-110K.

I'm sure they can last 250k right? (if well maintained)

Yea they will easily last that long if properly maintained. You definitely won't be disappointed with the car. I sold my 98 base and am now trying to find another one.

My base is at around 158k miles right now and still running strong. As long as you maintain it, it'll run fine.
