For those on a budget...

The fastest guy at our last rallycross was running regular studless snow tires with every 2nd tread block cut out. Those ***** gripped like nobody's business and they were throwaway snows from someone who got a new set. Probably not the prettiest solution, but it worked and for cheap.

Where are you located? May be able to give you some contact information for some local rallyists that would be willing to sell you take-offs.

Take-offs from a stage rally team are a good way to go.

What car is this for?

For rallycross on dirt, I'd recommend a soft compound, open tread, relatively small diameter. 25" diameter is going to be a pretty big tire, like a 16/65R15 or 17/65R15 (650mm dia)... those are big tires, for like Turbo AWD cars, 300hp, etc. Just under 25" is a 195/65R15--which is also a big tire, designed for Turbo AWD cars.

If you're running a Honda I'd go with 14's versus 15's. Substantial weight and cost savings, and better gearing, which comes in handy on tight rallycross style courses (unless you've got a LOT of power and are just spinning out).

Hankook is a good option but are completely sold out of pretty much everything until sometime in March. You'll probably want the R201s. Other good option are Silverstone (http://www.taborrallyteam.com)--they have a good selection of 14's as well as 15's. Michelins are another option but are more expensive. Yokohamas are pretty hard to find.

I am located in pittsburgh, they are starting up a little rally event.... and i am going to enter a EH hatchback stock ls bottem end gsr head on like 7-8psi right around 260whp...with a ITR tranny...This is a low budget event the reason for all the power is because i have it and i also want to drive it on the street....

I am going to have to look into the snow tire thing with the lugs cut off that sounds like a decent idea

I have any wheels laying around from a 13" to a 15"

i figured the 25" would give me clearance..

do wide tires work better on a dirt track?

thanks guys

Frankly we don't have a lot of choices on widths. Its usually dictated by something else. You could try grooved snow tires, but they probably won't be as good as gravel/mud/dirt tires.

I think with that kind of power you'll want to go with 15's. I would recommend going with real rally tires, take-offs from stage rally teams. Look for guys that have open class or PGT WRXes. 195/65R15 (Hankooks or Silverstones) or 16/65R15s (Michelins). You probably could get away with 17/65R15s, but they are pretty big. Michelin ZER80/ZEL80s will probably be what you'll find.

Get ahold of Susquehanna Motorsports (http://www.rallylights.com) and see if they have any contacts. Havspeed is near there (http://www.havspeed.com/). They may not have the right sizes for you but may know who will. Organizers of STPR would probably know some people (http://www.stpr.org/).

You may struggle a bit from the get-go, as that may not be the best scenario to learn to drive on loose surfaces. You'll have to exercise a lot of restraint with the throttle until you find grip.

For the Hankooks I'd go with the R201's in 185/60R15's or 195/65R15 in the G70 (soft) or G50 (medium) compound. Those'll run you about $120 each. I'd probably start with the 185/60R15 in soft and see how they work out. If you want them to last a while (I would think the softs would easily last a season of rallyx), get the mediums. If you're just chewing up the tires and having tons of wheel spin, try the 195s.

In the Michelin's I'd go with the ZE(L/R)70 in 16/65R15. Its going to be taller than both of the Hankooks, and is asymetrical ZEL70 for left ZER70 for right.. Will be closer to the 195/65R15 Hankook in size. ZE(L/R)70s are the soft compound, ZE(L/R)80 are the medium compound. For dirt (especially rallyx) I recommend soft. Michelins can be had from SubeSport and Libra Racing.

You may experience rubbing in tight sections with the bigger tires (195s in Hankook, 16/65's in Michelin)--if the rubbing is bad enough can cause axles to break (think tight turn, rub, full power, then landing on the loaded corner). Best solution is to use wheel spacers. 1" ones will allow you to use stock wheel studs, and give plenty of room for big tires and yet still clear fenders.

I think I'd try the Hankook R201 185/60R15's Soft.
