Default Rock chips ----> rust starting...[paint experts help!]

the wife's car is not doing so well...

'05 silver TSX, about 40 miles of highway driving daily.

shes got some small rock chips on her hood that are starting to rust thanks to NY's wonderful over usage of salt.

Was wondering if anyone had any ideas or recommendations to combat this problem. ive read so many different opinions on the web regarding the "proper" way to fix it.

what to do?! paint experts help!

i think if you just seal the chips up they wont rust anymore, so just try some of that touch up paint and fill in the chip and make sure its sealed up. im so sick of new yorks salt and ****
we didnt even get any ******* snow lol

I know they make little pen style spot sanders. Might not be a bad idea to just scuff some of the rust off before touching up

I would definately get rid of the rust before you paint. Get a little sandpaper and sand to smooth metal, then get some touch up paint and clear coat, and some 1500-2000 grit sand paper.

Fill the chip up with paint, sand it smooth, hit it with some clear coat, and wet sand the area so you don't have little bumps of touch-up paint sticking up higher than the original finish.

If you leave the rust below the paint, it will just bubble up in another couple years and you will be in a world of hurt.

i say to sand down the rust and put touch up paint as stated above esp. since it is in the early rust stage

If you eventually plan on painting, I suggest to clean the chips w/ a little solvent/wax and grease remover. Touch up w/ epoxy or rust preventive primer. Touch up w base/clear mix or regular touch up over that. Thats a bit extreme and time consuming if you plan to refinish though, just a little touch up would be fine for short term period.
