Wow.
Funny, as much as I hate JDM stuff that looks like it might come in handy
.
The OEM one on my '95 EX is like in the trunk - you g2 like, reach back to get turn it on or off & it does nothing to illuminate the front.

looks like you would need the matching headliner though. I do like the extra sun-visor just in front of it that covers the space between the headliner and the rear-view mirror. That would come in handy every day on my work commute. Too bad I drive a CRX everyday (or maybe it's good for my wallet

As does my EJ1.
It's to block the sun...
Think about it. If you have both "main" sun visors flipped down, then that one flipped down (which covers the space between the top of the mirror and the headliner) - the whole headliner coverage area is lowered 6" or so. Not JUST on both sides - but b/c of the mirror, that sun visor, and both "main ones" it's covered in the middle too.
My '90 Mercedes 300E had that center flipdown visor too, comes in handy, think my probe had it too but I don't remember too well.

that center viser comes in ex/si's. the map light thing your looking at comes in 2 versions. the one you have pictured is the gathers setup as someone already said. they also make it with just the light in a trim ring about the same outer size as the on pictured but a little thinner if i remember right. they map light section itself is the same one used up front in a 96 up civic. not sure if it comes in all trim levels, but i think most ex/si's have it. if you cut that bubble in the headliner where the roof motor is there are 2 metal brackets with the bolt holes for that light to bolt up. in the 5th gens.

gathers maplight/tweeter. not worth it unless you also have the complete gathers rear speakers (worth it only for the fact that everything will match. not because its a worthly upgrade) the tweeters stink (because its next to your head instead of at the corners), it sits too low, you need to make sure you have the rubber base aswell so it sits correctly (photos shows it without the base and it will look weird) and you need to make sure you have the bracket under your headliner, if you want it to bolt in as its suppose to be.
i use this instead,

along with pioneer carrozzeria mirror tweeters, a much better cleaner option.

the trim or base i assume your talkaing about on the one i use is a jdm optional part. the section that has the clear light cover , lights and stuff is the same size, uses the same size light bulb as the 96-98 civic maplight. the base on this one is all one piece, and this one aswell as 96-98 piece can be screwed in by removing the clear cover and bolts down on the bracket under the headliner.when you remove the clear cover you will see two negative ground holes and two bulbs
so yes the 96-98 part is similiar in size and how its put on, but both pieces are not interchangible except for the clear cover , and lightbulbs.
so if you have the brackets under your headliner you should be able to buy the 96-98 maplight and bolt it on. you will just need to make sure you cut the headliner exactly, which is very hard since the 96-98 maplight doesnt have too much to cover your cutting mistakes...

the yellow line there is suppose to be a curved base that goes there and makes everything line up smooth with the curve on the headliner.. this person is missing the base.
as far as the maplight part, in blue no this looks to be different from the 96-98 maplight. it looks like it can be pulled out and away from the speaker system due to the rubber outer part. so i do not think it will work if you were to just use that part to then put on your car.

Mine:

And heres what it looks like without the rubber spacer:

And the rubber spacer in question:

Without it, that maplight only works on non-monroof'ed eg's.

yea the gathers speaker system was a honda accessories part,so you can only see it in the honda access accessories catelog
brandon
the gathers maplight/tweeter was sold as a complete sound system. meaning the buyer of the car had the option to have a 6, 8, or 10 speaker gathers system. gathers had a normal radio system along with a digital system called DSP or digital signal processor which included the cd changer in the arm rest, and came with a cd headunit.
there were many headunits , cd changer, and cd controllers to choose from this complete system.
there are part numbers but it seems to only be for the complete system. but let me translate the japanese writing and ill see if i can find the part number for the maplight combo.
the complete gathers 10 speaker digital system was priced at around $3,500 when brand new.

and i would agree with you, its not the design of the speaker system. but the speakers themselves that suck. pretty much oem speakers with gathers stickers on the back.

great info, Jackie. Ive been trying to get a copy of that book.. so if youve got an extra one...
But what was the 10 speaker system? All 4 in the back, the 2 door speakers, and then the 2 maplight tweeters... where were the extra 2? Were they also "us ex style" door tweeters?
And what was the carrozeria tweeter option.. what did it come with? The ones that sit where the mirror trim goes.
