tires for track suggestions?
Hi all, I am looking to buy some tires for hpde or track events i been to about 6 hpde events with cheapy tires. I am thinking about spending around 60-80 dollars on each tire. The car is an eg hatch with stock suspension and stock b16a motor. The rim is bbs 14x6 wheel. These tires will never see street (only track). I would like to know what size tire and specs rating like hr or z etc to get thanks?

what is your driving style and how much seat time have you had?
I ask because I would not reccomend a race compound to anyone if they are still learning the basics. Or still mastering it.
the new azenis have an acceptable heat range for HPDE and still have that squeal if youre doing something wrong. the Hankook equivalent is also a good choice.
but if you are good enough I'd say the toyo RA1s would be a good choice entry level R-Compound

I would say about total 4hrs of seat time iam still a beginner i just want to get something a little better than the 30-40 dollars per tire that i had. Just wanted to know what brand, tire series, and rating to get this time (for sure not R ratings)

oh in that case, the hankook ventus might be of interest. I think they are cheaper than the azenis but supposedly are comparable in performance.
A 195/50/14 might work for you. Im not sure, the smallest wheel I used for HPDE was 15x7 and my tire was a 205/50/15.

not so fast
I have brand new a set of 195/60-14 Azenis 215s sitting in my garage. I'll let them go for $180 for the set for 4 (thats $45 ea!). They've never been mounted.

They take about 50-100 of normal driving to rub off the mold residue.

dont brand new performance tires need to be heat cycled to perform to their max potential? for those whodont pay the extra cost to get them heat cycled, whats your method?

To break-in and heat cycle the tire, drive approximately 100 miles of normal driving. The continual flexing of the carcass and rubber compound generates the heat, which completes the heat cycling process. Also, put about 30 psi cold air pressure in these tires for normal driving.

Okay, let me re-phrase my suggestion about tire pressures since RJ brought up a good point.
Put 30 psi of air at any temperature of the source, or make sure that there is 30 psi in the tires before the car has been driven or at least a couple of hours after it has last been driven. Now, if the car is being driven on Venus or close to the Sun, disregard this advice.
