different wheel sizes front and rear

a local shop is selling weds sport sa90's 17x8 front and 17x9 back. i was just wondering why you would buy different size wheels for the front and rear.

rwd cars or a "staggered fitment"

not good for the si.

From what ived heard its for grip issues or something like that..
