jack up your car, spray a crapload of simple green on the oil pan and the block, etc. Let it sit, then take a hose and spray the **** out of it. Use a high powered sprayer and that dirt doesn't stand a chance.
brake parts cleaner is the ****. not as powerful as carb cleaner so it wont burn though whires, but its really easy to use just spray all over the block and the grase melts right off.

put some diesel in a 99 cent walmart spray bottle. give the engine (cold preferrably) a good soaking with the diesel fuel. let it sit a few mins then clean engine with high pressure sprayer. follow up with simple green to cut the oily resudue. that aerosol engine cleaner, gunk or whatever, is just diesel. works great
The thing is that i have a bare block and wondering if any types of solvent would damage the interal side of the block. For example would simple green affect my cylinder walls???

if cleaning chemicals get inside your engine, i would be worried about more serious problems. Like the combustion from inside your engine getting to your cleaners, lol.
