Default Valve lash question to all engine gurus...

Here are the values I recorded at 48k kms (32k miles).

Cyl.:...........Exhaust:............Intake:

#4.................0.007...............0.007
.....................0.007...............0.007

#3.................0.008...............0.007
.....................0.008...............0.007

#2.................0.009...............0.007
.....................0.007...............0.007

#1.................0.009...............0.007
.....................0.009...............0.007

Spec......0.007"-0.008"......0.006"-0.007"

Assuming they were all set to spec at the factory...and judging by the intake side they were...could there be an underlying problem, cause, etc, that may be related to the deviation on the exhaust side, or is it just plain normal?? And if it is, is it also normal for ONLY the exhaust side to deviate??

I will assume you did the check with the engine cold.

ANyway, you are thinking too much about it. Just adjust them and go on with life.

its normal for it to go out of spec in time. otherwise why would you ever need to relash them at certain intervals?

it's too bad you didn't read the plugs at WOT to see how each cylinder was running.

just a thought....

Zyg, you can safely take the adjustments down below factory specs by .001" on either cam, on stock cams. (like .005" intake, .006" exhaust) Some guys do that and they think it helps improve some areas of the power band, but I am sure some other area of the power band may be decreased. If you take it down too low you can risk burning a valve if they do not close properly/tight enough to transfer heat to the head. I always adjust mine to the tight end of the Honda spec (.006" in and .007" ex), and I check mine a couple times per year min, sometimes more. But this leads to another good question. I remember some guys saying that they adjusted the #3 and #2 cylinders with a bit more clearance on their enginews as those cylinders seem to run hotter and perhaps leaner than the other two cylinders. I don't have much information on that though, I wonder if anyone else can shed some light on that issue ?

Joey

JSIR,
you said you check yours twice a year. Do you ever notice any deviation within such a short timeframe??
