96 cbr600. Got a problem
I just got me a 96 cbr600. First time riding it today. Ran great all day. Then about an hour before i was going to put it up i was riding down the road and it just started sputtering like it was out of gas and then cut off. It wasn't out of gas. I tried to restart it but it wouldn't start. I am really new to bikes and i have no clue as to what is wrong... When i try tried to start it the lights went dim and it had a hard time turning over.. I think the battery is dead but why would it cut off while i was riding? Anyone have any idea as to what is wrong?
thx
thx
most likely a problem with the battery and/or charging system.
try jumping it and see if it cuts out again, then its most likely a charging problem.
make sure and check all connections because in most cases that is the problem

oh yea just in case you dont know:
Jump starting a motorcycle
Jump starting a motorcycle
I doubt its batterys. Once the motorcycle starts dont it charge on its own?
My guess is.... spark plugs dead
or
The carburator sucked something in
dunno... thats all i can think of....

How do you know it wasn't out of gas? Just because their is gas in the tank doesn't mean your not out of gas. Try switching to reserve and see if it starts. You may have just run the gas down to low, this is normal.
Sounds like your bike wasn't charging the batt, and drained it from riding around. On Hondas usually this means the regulator/rectifier is shot (that's what charges the battery). Get it checked out, and if your reg/rect is gone don't ride the bike until you replace it, or you'll burn your alternator too.
I'll bet it's a reserve gas issue.
On a GS500e I used to ride it would cut out with 1/4 tank of gas in it when I needed to swtich to reserve.

it's probably the voltage regulator let the charging system overcharge the battery and boil all the fluid out (happened to my CBR600f3). Check to see what the charging system is putting out.
I know it wasn't out of gas cause i got a can and filled it back up
and after tying to start it a couple times the lights went dim and then the starter wouldn't even turn over

It sounds like you ran out of gas. Think of the reserve as smaller tank within the gas tank.
The bike will run really sluggish and will start studdering and the exhaust will start to sound muddy once the main tank is drained. What you should do is try to turn the fuel petcock to reserve and it will start running off the reserve or secondary tank.
If you dont catch it in time, it will cut off on you completely because it is getting no fuel. In this instance put it on reserve, turn the choke lever on and try starting it.
If you do not put the choke on and start cranking away obviously it is going to drain the battery. The starter draws alot of current and motorcycle batteries dont really have alot of reserve in that lil ole battery.
If the voltage regulator or the charging system went bad the lights would start dimming and progressively go out completely.
what he has described is running out of fuel then turning the starter over without "priming" the fuel lines it will kill the battery. Stick a battery charger on the batt, fill the tank up, hit the choke and fire her up.
You can test the voltage at the battery when it is running. If it is over 12 volts then you know your system is charging. Dont know the exact voltage, but i could check it on my bike while it is running and post up.
