Default Ticking from B18C1 head

I have a DB8 with a low km B18C1 from a 00 gsr. There is an annoying ticking coming from the valve train i believe. There ticking gets faster as I accelerate. I thought maybe it need a valve adjustment, but that did not work.

Any ideas what I should check for?

Yeah do a valve lash adjustment and check your oil level.

Compression is good!

The ticking goes away when in vtec. So maybe it is the valves?

Yeah, my mechanic thinks it might be loud LMAs also.

Does this explain my the sound goes away when you are in vtec?

usually in a compression test... if you add a teaspoon of oil and u lose sound/gain compression... its bad piston rings... sooo u might want to ask about that too...

Mines has a ticking too. I almost mistook it for pinging because of gas reasons. Could it be a valve spring or something?

It is VERY common for Honda injectors to be loud. Not saying it is definately your injectors, but I wouldn't be surprised. There have also been a ton of people who thought they did the adjustment correctly, but didn't for one reason or another. Also not trying to say you did it wrong, but consider it a possibility.

Yeah it sounds like the noise is coming from the top right corner aswhile. I thought the valvelash needed to be adjusted, but it only helps alittle.

This sounds makes my motor sound like a old car. Its really annoying. I just want to pin point thats causing it so that i can fix it.

Im really thinking it has to do with the valves. It helps explain why the sound goes away in vtec. In vtec the motor sounds great!

Maybe you could narrow it down with a good ol fashioned low-tech inspection. What I mean is either get an automotive stethoscope, or use a long screwdriver held up to your ear (the plastic end, not the metal end to pin-point the sound.

It's the lost motion assemblies. When not in vtec, the third rocker (the vtec rocker) is not being used and will bounce around and tick if the spring is worn. Once in vtec, the rocker gets used and doesn't bounce around so the noise stops. I can't believe how many people suggested valve adjustment when you said you did that and it didn't help... not to mention that about 10 people said the same thing as if you didn't read it the first time.

It shouldn't be too hard. Basically take out the cams and then if I remember right, you just pull the LMAs up and they'll come off. People do the ITR/Prelude LMA mod because I think they're shorter, which bigger cams need if they're big enough, and so that the LMAs don't bind when used with the big cam (you need to use washers with the Prelude ones). Basically just do a search on H-T and there's a bunch of info about this stuff.

What is the sound difference between an LMA replacement and valve needing to be adjusted? Would I be able to tell which is which by hearing it?
