Another Idle Thread
Hey guys, I'm new here.
I just got an '89 hatch with a b18a1 swap and have a few issues I'd like to sort out.
The car, while warming (which it never really seems to finish doing) revs around 2500-2800rpm. This seems far out of line with what it should be idling at while cold.
Once it warms up however (a feat which can only be achieved by about two hours of regular driving or fifteen minutes of sitting still) the idle drops down to 850-900 and it behaves in a way I'd call 'normal.'
Now I'm thinking a big part of the problem is the thermostat. I believe it's stuck open and thus not letting the car warm up.
On the other hand: Why is my car revving that high in the first place? Isn't the cold idle speed supposed to be around 1800rpm(ish)?
Thanks for any insight anyone may be able to offer.

Thermostat will help some. Make sure to bleed all air out of the system, and set your idle speed correctly. If that doesn't help, clean your FITV (if you have one), IACV, and check for vaccuum leaks.
sounds like the fast idle valve since you say it only does this while cold..remove it and clean it out with some carb cleaner,
also you're not making any sense about it takes 2 hours to warm up while driveing,,but only takes 15 minutes of sitting still to warm up,...It usually warms up faster while driving since the engine is actually working and has a load on it....
also about not warming up it could be the thermostat,,but also you're in canada? i know it gets cold as hell there right now my car barely has any heat with the 10 degrees F in nj,,so i know its got to be negative something up there and not warming up for 2 hours would be somewhat normal...how was the car when it was fall?

I can drive from one end of town to the other and the engine temp gauge is still at rest... I dunno.
I just got the car (believe I stated so in my first post) so I have no idea how it was in the fall.
As for the temperature up here: Around 41F during the day.
Alright, I'll rip apart the fast idle thermo valve and give it a good cleaning.
