Ice Racing project on the cheap
First you start out with a 1988 Honda Civic DX that you picked up as a right off. Next you gut everything out of the car you don't thin you need. After that reinstall a few things (like the dash and heating ducts ) that you now need that you never thought you did. Don't worry about the rust cause fiberglass and decals will fix that.

Now I said this was ont eh cheap not pretty. We were running low on time so we made due. We used 1.25" wall DOM ( drawn over mandrel) tubing to build our roll cage to ministock rules ( think 4 cyl stock car), we used much thicker and better tubing then required because we are scared of dying.

The car now has a MPFi swap and an Si transmission after we blew up the stock DX clutch with 300 000+ km on it, hehee. The car was so bent that when we pulled the tranny and went to put the new one in, nothing even remotely lined up. What i wouldn't do without prybars!
We put in an Si flyewheel (its lighter) and some random used clutch that fit the splines and whatever pressure plate I could find and threw it back together. Also found some used spark plugs that were in better shape then the ones I had, so guess where they ended up!
The car although gutted weighs more then stock, buts I can ram other cars and roll over in comfort. With 14" chrysler heavy *** steelies the car was running mid 15 second passes, which is awesome considering it was mid 18's stock.

this is our homemade uncomfortable as hell aluminum racing seat. it works great...very very cold when you are racing at -25C with just a window net and no window, fun..I love winter
we are also runnijng a 5 point harness and al other required safety equipment.
That was all last year. this year we thought wed step it up a notch and look presentable.

So we did a lot of bodywork and got kicked out of the paintbooth, so decided to race with teh car preped for paint. oh well...it'll probably get smashed up anyways.
NEXT WEEK

painted the roll cage

painted the car, added some decals, and VOILA Ice racer that we spent about 1500 bucks

we are running on VW and Saturn temporaries because we seem to go much faster on them. about 50 bolts per tire, yes bolts, GM fender bolts to be exact. it is very time consuming to make tires. First you shave all the tread off, then mark your pattern, drill all the holes, install all the bolts ( dont forget the loctite), install tire goo to seal up the 50+ holes, and there you have it. Repeat ten times so you have spares for when you destroy your tires!

oh yeah and we shaved the door handle ( poorly of course) and welded the driver door shut because we had to gut and cut everything away to close the door to fit around our cage
