You didnt mention what size (ap1/ap2?) but im currently on RE050A's on ap1 wheels and they are amazing. Not quite up to the S02's as far as dry traction but they are definitely good tires.

ES100s have consistently tested to be one of the worst tires out there! if you were satisfied with those, though, try the bridgestone potenza RE01-R (consistently tested to be mother freaking awesome) and you will be blown away. Honorable mentions: I used to have BFG KDs on my S13, and those were amazing. Also, the michelin pilot sport 2, I've heard great things about wet/dry traction on these, as the price would $ugge$t.

ive done the es100, s02, and a little on some toyo ra1's. the mx is a good tire. i ran them on my ap1 back in the day. from there i went with s03's. best tire this side of an r compound imho. not to mention how hard you can push it in the rain
. just a great tire. either way, and you already know this, the rears wont last too long.

Well, the RE050A is less of a hardcore performance tire, and more of an OEM level tire. Concentrating on rolling resistance, quiet ride, and treadwear. These aren't going to grip nearly as well as an RE01-R. Go to tire rack and read some reviews on those tires. You'll see that the RE050A isnt really geared towards performance. Those are stock on BMW Z4s. Pretty much any bridgestone will perform great in the rain due to its UNI-T tread design. At full tread, the tire disperses water using well...full tread. At half tread, however, when most tires start to break down in wet performance, Bridgestones have a second tread layer that handles water much better. This compensates for treadwear, and you get a tire that performs in the wet from day 1 to when you throw them out. The advantage to this is that the less tread you have on a tire, the more they will grip in the dry as long as they have not been overly heat cycled (when they become blue and purple on the shoulders, they have been overly heat cycled, so throw them out), but you also get to keep your wet traction.
I work at a tire shop
. Bridgestone was just named #1 tire in the world or something crazy.
Also, the advantage of getting a more established name brand (see MORE EXPENSIVE) tire is not nessacarily grip. Falken Azenis grip awesome. and they're dirt cheap. However, they dont wear nearly as well as BFG KDs, They also get heat cycled faster...which means that they are chemically not as good, And they dont balance out as well. Azenis make great track tires on a budget, but if you're looking for an awesome street tire that can also grip just as well as a tire like an Azenis on the track, and will last a long time and continue to grip consistently, you're looking to spend a bit more money. The reason i like the RE01-Rs so much is because they offer Bridgestone quality, and awesome grip at a REALLY kick *** price.

lol what's with all the cheap tire suggestions? You guys drive uplevel cars. Remember that tires are the only part of your car that touch the ground. Tires are also the BIGGEST handling difference for the price. Might as well spend a few more $$ to make sure you're messin with the best, IMO.

come take a ride with me and hold on since you wont be staying on the ground....
look maybe if you look around and see that 80% of people with S2K waste their $ based on hype .... spend this spend that..
on the other hand the other 20% are smart and buy what worked for them..
but go ahead and pay $200 each for a tire... ill spend half that and still be right there or ahead of the competition....

break away is progressive on spt/mx, the shoulder is softer compare to oem tires tho'
spt handle better than es100 and ziex for sure, i had ziex before on my accord and it's wears too fast for a daily rubber.
MX and SPT is great for the money, i am running spt on my daily roller
just don't get the asx ast dog sh-t

The RE01-Rs are $139 for 225/45/17 and 140something for 245/40/17 The last time i checked. Like i said...good price for a great tire. Im not into overpaying for anything either. And i agree with your "minimum effort, maximum gain" type of thinking. I just think longjevity, quality, and ultimate performance should be factored in as well. I'm sure your tires work great, and i know that driving style adjustments account for a lot of performance gain. But I could say the same...If you took a ride in my S13 that had KDs in the summertime, I would have made a beleiver out of you as well. I still havent recieved or installed my RE01-Rs on my S2K because of the blistering cold that causes me not to be motivated.

Well, he said summer/wet, not R-compound. Those arent very practical for daily driving. Seeing as how you have to heat cycle them initially. Then you have to heat cycle them when you want to drive on them hard. You cant park the car on them for more than overnight. You cant store them in freezing temps. They last like what? 1000 miles? I'm pretty sure he just wanted a street tire.

It is based on preference right?
I already gave suggestions for wet tires, but someone mentioned the good old price/quality battle, something about "$200 plus", so I gave them an example that falls quite short of $200, and perform at least as well as the RE-01s. They do "OK" in the rain, as well as the stock RE050s or the Advan Neova that both cost more than what I run. They have already been heat cycled a good 10 times (5 before the track days, 3 track days on the current set, and some DDing in between. I can park on them overnight once they cool, and I have no problems with flat-spotting. I'm in SoCal where there's no such thing as freezing temps (yet
). I'm not just recommending something out of the blue; all the tires I've listed I've already used.

I've also heard good things about the HANKOOK RS2-Z212. If you wanna stay inexpensive.

Longer warm up time, but progressive in the dry and wet.
