Default GPS Placement Question

I was curious for those non-Navi Civics, has anyone tried mounting a GPS in the console behind the stick, or in the cavity directly below the AC unit? I am looking into a Magellan or Garmin GPS but don't like the look of it on the dash. Can I tuck it into the storage space directly behind the stick shift? Pics if possible

To get the best reception the GPS antenna must be as close to a window as possible. You may be able to put it in the places you mentioned, but the dash/windshield will give you by far the best reception.

I got your back. On my spare time i actually tried to do a sorta box so the gps won't be sitting inside the box behind the shift-stick and hide the lcd. But i tried measuring and when i made the small box it came out a bit smaller when i tried to fit it in that small compartment behind the stick. Is it me or the sedan's have a bigger compartment than the coupes?

For the California people: We're not allowed to have it mounted on the windshield

Anyone try one mounted on the dashboard? I've seen a few navi's that mounted on the dashboard.

Why not? In all reality that is the safest place since you dont have to completely take your eyes off of the road to look at it.

California Vehicle Code section 26708(a)(1) provides that "No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows." Drivers in California should not use the suction mount on their windshield or side or rear windows.

Part of that is to prevent use of radar detectors I believe, not positive though.

You didnt post the whole thing..... the GPS might be able to fall into this category:

"(B) The capability for electronic toll and traffic management on public or private roads or facilities."

I live in So.Cal. and have never had anyone say anything. Plus having it on the
left side it is very hard to see that anything is there from outside the car. My sides
are Tinted.

Yep its the TomTom 910 with the bigger screen. It works great I think one of the best
out there. Plus I use the bluetooth speaker phone with it.

so yeah I went to visit my mom in farmingdale before heading back to queens...
here are some quick snaps of my ghetto portable gps installation lol

so hmm I did some filling with cardboard and glue them together. At that time I had some yellow padding and some black plastic bag so i started cutting to cover it. You can obviously get some dark padding to cover it all. Leave some space for the cords from the car apadter to your gps unit.

I also bought the antenna that comes w/a cord...sorta like this one

Then I needed something to hide it. If you have an si or another car w/a black interior then it'd be less noticable but this car didn't. So yeah I pushed the cord really hard in between the plastic edges and i didnt need any tape(the yellow line is where the black cord is located and jammed in).

The wire is hidden underneath the floormats and funny carpets(lol) and under your passanger seat...

So hmm yeah I needed to find a way to get it up near to the rear window so i'll have a good signal from the satellite.

this is the end of the antenna that lies behind the right headrest on the rear seats.

Yup... I was just about to describe this... I used my Tomtom for the first time today in the new car... I just put the suction cup to the small window up front on the driverside... of course... I have a sedan, so I have the small windows!

I don't like those suction cups. If you drive over a bump your gps can fall down and might break...

Thanks Striker, thats EXACTLY the type of setup I was lookin for with the lower GPS. I think the night shots look sick! I was wondering though, the gps unites with the suction cups... can't you just stick them to the base of that "box" that you put your gps unit into? Or is that a window stick only? But yeah, thanks for the pics, looks great.

I tried using the suction cup but it only works on the windshield/windows...
I guess i had to be creative...
And that's a magellan Roadmate 760 and it fits in there perfectly.
But I did that for my mom lol
That gps used to be mine but ehh yeah i wanna buy the in-dash pioneer navi(about 1,500 ouch!) and install it on the dashboard so uhh yeah the install is basically a 5 min procedure. No need for ductape or any other sort for placement of the antenna's cord. Your hands will be the only tools needed .

I don't know what kind of suction cup your GPS has, but the one with the Tomtom is not coming off unless I want it to...

The 910 is pretty good... mine is a bit buggy at times (freezes up at the start screen) but a push of the reset button and it behaves again!

I bought the 910 to use the 20GB of space for MP3s on roadtrips... one less piece of electronics to risk being stolen... not to mention, it can be used as a radio at the hotl/condo too!
