Default Evaporative emissions control canister

I'm getting gas fumes in the passenger compartment of my '98 CRV. My mechanic says it's probably the charcoal canister in the engine compartment. It's $175.00 at the Honda dealer! My gas tank isn't leaking, nor are any of the lines off the fuel bar leaknig. It starts to smell when the car is warmed up. Any way around buying a new canister? Any way it could be something else? The check engine light is not coming on, or anything. Please help! Thanks.

Look at the injectors, fuel lines, and connections for any signs of seepage. The evap canister, unless it's got a hole in it, should be OK. You could remove it and shake it up to loosen the carbon granuals inside it if they clumped together.

My wifes 02 CR-V did the same thing last year. Had the gas smell, no engine light, etc. We replaced the evap. and its fine now.

Hi. Thanks for the suggestion about shaking up the canister - it's worth a shot. I'm trying to get around paying $200.00 for a part that should cost about $10.00. No seepage around the lines, btw.

Is there a way to get around paying $200.00 for a new canister? Anybody else who makes a generic one? Did you pay that kind of money for your wife's '02 canister?

I actually used to work for a local Honda dealer and they still give me my employee discount. Try http://www.bernardiparts.com/SearchOptions.aspx

just put in your info. Its easier if you have the part # for it.

Thanks! Researched the part no., went to the site. Best price yet. No cheesy after-market knockoffs for that part, huh?
