Default B20B Vtec....What's the best ECU to run it with.

Ok I have tried searching here and some other forums. I now have a B20B W/B16A head ITR Intake manifold, ITR Header, Unorthodox crank pulleys, BDL Fuel rail, AEM Fuel pressure regulator. This whole setup came from an OBD1 EG and is going into another EG. I have everything to run this but the ECU. I have thought of running a OBD1 P72 and Chip it with chrome to run the motor, but I also have a P28 that I can chip to use chrome. My question is, for the setup that I am gonna run, what ECU should I use on the car? What ECU are people running on to run their motors? I plan on running chrome and tuning it.

Also, would you guys recommend using adjustable cam gears to further tune the engine to it's fullest potential?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

P28-cheap, plentiful, works.

What he said. There's no advantage to the p72 since you have a B16 head. As for the cam gears, yes they will make a difference but you'd probably have to tune them on a dyno since the *** dyno can be fairly misleading about what they're doing to your powerband.

Any chipped ecu will work- in fact, they should all work to the highest standards if you pay for a proper tune; taking into consideration you didn't buy a junk ecu that has no ZIF socket.

i guess a very few will say p72 as it retains it's $cost better by having the knock board... but it's up to you. They should perform the same.....

Though I don't work with straight swaps much anymore, I'm building a CRVTEC for my friend right now (using the B20Z bottom end), and I'm going to try the JDM ITR comp. I know the ECU's timing map is much more aggressive than the stock GSR (the ECU I hate the most), and it made all the difference on my buddy's stock GSR/EJ a long time ago, but I don't know how it's going to work yet. And I realize you're talking about an OBDI ECU in your case, but I'm just saying what I'm using. Normally I'd just chip a P28, but there's not a lot of programs I like for a relatively stock motor... so yea.

Just incase I didn't make it clear either... Don't use the P72. It's mapped horribly from the factory. As everyone else said, just chip a P28 with a good proggy.

umm yes... I guess I should have clarified that this is assuming you socket and chip it using (crome, uberdata, neptune, hondata, etc) - it will run whatever program and maps you put on there.

It goes without saying that if you're going to build a motor and try to run off a stock honda ecu for another motor, that you're either cheap or stupid; most likely both.

Oh my bad... you are indeed right assuming you're not just talking about a stock comp.

If you're running B20 pistons, NO. You'll most likely end up with piston to valve contact if you are, because there isn't enough valve relief in the piston.

hence i wont be able to use aftermarket cams... providing that the bigger lobes will cause the valves to travel further ?

I used the P28 Ecu running Chrome. As far as injectors they are still the stock B16 I think. I did use a ITR intake manifold and an ITR Header also. One of the reasons why my torque numbers might be lower by 5ft is cause Im using a fidanza 7.5 flywheel and a n unorthodox pulley kit.

Lean conditions promote detonation; which will blow your motor.
Rich conditions promote gas consumption; which will foul your spark plugs and oil.
