Default Drums or Discs? Help me decide.

I have a 1991 EF. I have drums in the back in excellent condition.

I plan on doing Auto X and other forms of road racing.

I was thining of upgrading to Integra calipers and 11 inch rotors in the front (fastbrakes kit) and leaving the drums in the back...with performance shoes and SS lines all around. I would also upgrade to Integra master cyl and booster.

Should I bother converting to rear discs?

Drums are better for e-braking although...

HELP!

Can somebody enlighten me to not convert to discs?
Are there a lot of autox guys out there using rear drums?

Yeah, I had drums on my race CRX and they did just fine. Nearly three quarters of your braking force is applied to the front wheels anyway. Most of the EF guys I know are switching to HF drums anyway because they're super light.

drums are lighter and offer plenty of stopping power, but discs are easier to service and have a more consistent pedal feel.

Drums will expand when they get hot. What happens when you keep trying to push something against a surface that expands? Yeah you have to push it further and further. That is one of the problems with drums.

Disks are easier to maintain, but they are 7 lbs heavier. For autocross, drums are more than enough. They work for road race, but they may not be the best option.

If you have disks for a cheap option swap, if not wait until later. Use the money for something else.

I disagree.

I put disc in the rear of my hatch and my stopping distance was cut in half. I dont car what anyone else says.

Discs.

Can you comprehend how retardedly wrong that post is? In half you say? Do you realize that to cut the braking distance in half for an STS civic you'd have to generate so much braking force that you'd completely unload the rear tires, right?

AutoX drums are fine (except for when you have to service them)
in RR discs are the thing to have

I know when I changed the everything to integra on my civic but the front brake setup, the rear would brake loose before the front.

There is NO DOUBT that if you change your brakes to discs you will notice a difference in stopping and easy service. You just haev to ask yourself is it worth the weight?

12lb weight savings VS easy service, better stopping, and room to grow in car

No brainer for me! I switched to discs.
Also I would just go junkyard a set of integra brakes instead of doing the stoptech kit. Then buy some cobalt pads, lines and brake fluid. It will be a different car.

sounds like the drums were busted and your pressure distribution was fucked up pre swap.

You can only generate as much braking force as you have traction, and a quick yank of the e-brake should prove that the drums can do that.

Wow that sucks, what did you do to fix that? I'm sure the right prop valve would help with this right?

HF brakes front and back on mine. In autox, brake fade isn't an issue. Weight is.

There are basic laws of physics that invalidate what you said. Or, at the very least, your interpretation of your results.

I really appreciate all the responses.

I am going to have to think about it....

I can get the swap for really cheap although.

more seat time.

more seat time.

more seat time.

this is where you will improve. also, with some of the changes you were talking about, bigger brakes up front, etc., you might need to re-plumb your system and add a brake bias.

i have dozens of race weekends (not autocrosses) on the rear drums and only look at them every couple of weekends because i feel guilty if i don't. and that is with stock honda shoes.

and if rear discs can cut the stopping distance in half for a car, i don't want to drive that car.

1/2? Oh please! That's total BS.

If you're driving it hard, the rear wheels spend most of the time in the air anyway!

Haha... true. My CRX used to look like a dog taking a whiz going around tight corners.

yeah its true. I did the same thing on my 89. And with the airbagz on it, I leave enzos behind in the corners. Eat my VTEC dust ********!

This conversion would be totally worthless. the money would be better spent on beer, blow, and hookers.
