Ive done everything i can think of, checked cam and ingition timing, dizzy, changed plugs and wires, cleaned out EGR, injector cleaner and the car is still running like total ****.
sometimes it will start and run rough for about 15 sec then it will smooth out and run ok. It will backfire and sputter when you take off from lights and will again smooth out once you start moving. after the car runs for a while the cat turns red and it back fires. WHAT COULD IT BE
I looked at the computer and it blinks 5 times which is a map sensor, well im not entirely sure where that is on this car its alot different than the integra.
someone please tell me where it is....89 SI
please stick with me i need this fixed asap, its my daily

im not sure where your map is but when the cat gets red like that usually means that its clogged. does the car have a really bad smell to it
ya it would run pretty bad with a clogged cat.
p.s. i just started thinking, correct me if im wrong on this, but with a clogged cat wouldnt that change the manifold pressure cuasing it to throw a map sensor code?

I dont know if it would throw a map code, but a clogged cat does cause the car to run like crap. I had a clogged cat on another car and it idled terribly and had no power. I changed out a few other items trying to fix it, but nothing worked. When I changed the cat there was an instant differance.

change the cat, if the engine can't pump out the spent exhaust, then it won't create a vacuum in the manifold. Some of the exhasut is probably revertin ginto the intake manifold and causing a backfire as well.

is that why it runs so shitty at idle is because it cant pump it out, and why it runs better at higher rpm?
arent cats pretty pricey to replace?

ok i just went out and looked and there is no map sensor there on my car
it has the box with all the hoses coming out of it though on the passenger side, can you get a pick of that maybe.
and i changed out the wire that goes to the ignitor unit so maybe it sould just be the ignitor. can someone please find me trouble shooting info on the ignitor, i dont have a helms yet sorry.
thanks alot

I talked to a technician today and he said some of these hondas have the map sensor in the computer? I searched all over shop key today and could not find a single thing on the map sensor except how to trouble shoot it, it did not tell me where it was.
oh ya i looked on hondahookup and i signed up but they have not sent me email yet for some reason

did that it did not work
did that it did not work
You said you used injector cleaner, but have you tried replacing the injector(s)?
Could be fuel pump / fuel delivery issue? Has the filter been replaced? How about the charcoal canister.
and pressure regulator?
Timing been checked?
Also, since it's all vacuum tubes, could be a leak. Get a rubber hose and stick 1 end in your ear and use the other end to follow the hoses and listen for a sucking sound.
Don't forget about the O2 sensor. Think you have 2, one on the exhaust manifold ( a biscuit eater to get to) and one on the exhaust system before the Cat
When you start the car, what exactly does it do. As soon as the key is backed off, does it idle for a few secs, then start to idle poorly? Or does it immediately start off bad?
That year introduced a idle controller in addition to the fast idle controller, so what it does when you start it makes a difference. Also, when driving 1 idle controller would be in use as opposed to stopped in traffic.
Does it work better after warmed up?
How does punching it from idle work?
Lot's of things to look at, go from cheapest/easiest to fix to more expensive.
Oh, one last thing. ECU. and hope it's not that.
