Timed laps on VIR's Patriot Course 2/25 and 4/1/07
Some of you might not know about NASA's related driving activities during the upcoming VIR weekends. These events don't get a lot of buzz like the HPDE or roadracing, but they are a blast regardless.
So on Sunday February 25th and Sunday April 1st, we will hold "Circuitcross" events on VIR's 1.1 mile infield Patriot Course while the full course HPDE and roadracing goes on around us.
We call 'em "Circuitcross" events (instead of "Time Trial" or "Time Attack") because they are run like a very fast autocross, but on a permanent road circuit instead of a parking lot or airstrip. A timed run is about 90% of a lap, and we send cars out at roughly 30-second intervals. We don't slow the track down with cones, which means lots of third gear and some fourth gear on the straights.
Each Circuitcross will feature four 120-minute heats of 15 cars each, which should end up being 10+ timed laps each. We've got half-day sessions and no work assignments, just show up and drive (i.e. anyone within a reasonable driving distance who wasn't going to be there all weekend anyway can make a day trip of it.)
There are plenty of spots left for the first one on 2/25... which is why I'm posting, because we would like to see it break even financially:

Anyone signed up for the full course HPDE who would like to come play on Patriot against the clock also... is welcome to do so in the afternoon (during the roadracing enduro.)
Pre-reg is also open for the second Circuitcross on 4/1:

These events count for double points toward the NASA-MA '07 autoX championship. They are the cheapest way I know of... to drive at speed on any of the VIR configurations. They are the perfect way for any autocrosser, crew member, family member, friend, or related non-novice driver to get a taste of road course driving before signing up for a full weekend HPDE.
The Circuitcross events are intended to be one more step on the NASA Mid-Atlantic "ladder of speed." Safe, fast, fun for everyone! See ya there.
Thanks,
Jon

Also, here's a video of *exactly* what a fast Circuitcross run looks like:
