Some experienced ls/vtec fella's here will argue that the r/s ratio is overrated.

Not just the r/s ratio, the toothpicks they call rods aren't the best either.

Who said anything about r/s? and why should a noob be worried about that?
Ill rev my b18 to 8k all day and walk on 95% of all motor b16s.

Turbo the LS and laugh at all your VTEC friends as you pass them. That's what I did.

I hate it when people mention a B swap for either vtec or non vtec, and someone always buts in and says 'Turbo it'. Most people don't want to modify there cars to that point. Besides, nothing beats the sounds of an all motor car.

I believe being 20 cars ahead in your turbo b18 probably beats it.

an LS setup is a good way to go. We've built alot of streetable LS setups with just basic parts out there. IT all depends on what your goal is.

IF you're looking at over 220HP, then a big bore VTEC setup would most likely be a good platform to work with.
If you are looking at around 180-200, the LS setup can do that with ease. It also depends on your budget on what you can do.

No need for Vtec head conversion if you're not looking for massive amounts of power. a 180-200hp LS setup is fast enough for daily driving.

I would say it's up to your budget.

LS is cheaper, and can be turbo'd or a vtec head could be added later
If you have the money, do a gsr swap. or get a gsr bottom and a b16 head. I would go with 1.8l if you can afford it. the torque is more important than the hp

Sometimes illegal racing isn't everything. I'd much rather have a nice powerrange thruout the rpms then always having to be 'in boost'. I've driven both styles. 12.3 second all motor monster, 12.0 b16 turbo EG, both had there ups and downs, would much rather have an all motor monster in the long run. Besides, almost every turbo setup I've seen that didn't cost an arm and a leg weren't very reliable.

My turbo set-up cost me $1200 its a HMT kit and the CRX is pretty reliable still other than non-turbo related problems jst had to replace starter and battery but the car sits alot...

Anyways to the OP, I have a 90 CRX Si with a B16 and a 91 CRX Si with and LS-T both have good an bad qualities The LS has the torque the b16 dosen't if i was just going to do a swap and be done with it the B16 is perfect for that and fun to drive and a little faster than the LS...but if you have plans to do more i say LS since if you realy want overrated V-tac then you can go LS/Vtec or you cn just boost the LS or both...LS are cheaper and easier to find and you don't have to track down JDM parts...well thats my opinion

I still stand by my turbo comment, but throw it out and I agree with this:

horsepower sells motors
torque wins races..

Go with the LS. It's super durable, you can even break the timing belt without sending the valves into the pistons. It's a great motor, especially for starting out because it can handle some mistakes Plus, they are a dime a dozen

Pretty sure the LS just like any other honda motor is an interference motor and will indeed bend valves with a snaped timing belt... but you could get lucky and not bend a valve its happened before...

that must be why its easier to make more power and tq on a B18 than a b16.

B18A/B are great motors. Just dont have **** for top end past 6K. Put some 403's in it and that should help a bit.
