Default 235/40/17 on a 7.5???

Has anyone used 235/40/17 on a 7.5in wide rim? the recomended width is 8-9.5 i was just wondering if i was safe? It doesnt really make sense to me why a 245/45/17 is rated for a 7.5-9in wheel. Anyone have any experience with this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

it can be done without a problem.. done them before at work.. just not recommended for the bead of the tire.. i just don't like the look of it nor would do it on my personal vehicle just a preference and safety issue.. it is a prooven fact that tires that are basically forced on wheels that are not wide enough have a tenancy to separate

This was going to be a track set up so it would get plenty of abuse. Where are you refering to when you say the "bead" of the tire?

The bead of the tire is the inside edge of the tire, which fits along a ridge in the surface of the wheel when mounting.

Especially for track use, I would stick to the manufacturers' recommendations for rim width.

What kind of car is this for?
