How do you know if your car is worth hooking up?
i have a 94 accord lx (i think), everything stock. little over 170k, is this car worth putting time and money (mainly for apearence) into it, plus minor mechanic repairs. keep in mind, i will not be racing or abusing the car, i just want it to look nice and ride as durable as possible, i don't have much money, but will buy another accord with less mileage if its necessary, i need the car for atleast 2-3 years. any thoughts?
edited - i also have access to a 95 v6 accord (also stock), with less mileage, but not a lot less. the kid is willing to trade. is the trade worth it? why is he willing to give up the v6 for the 4cyl?

Some people's Accord and Accords on the road has been running for some time. Some has quoted that it can even run up to 500,000 miles. If you keep it good. I think the Accord would do. Last time I saw it, the price was around 3600 at the CarFaire. The Accord you have now is as durable as it gets. And better yet, you fix it up yourself, so it must look good to you.
Anyways, get timing belt change every 70,000 or something to prevent any excessive damage. Change you oil(duh) change your tranny fluid. Lubricate everything that needs to be lubricated. Your accord will run forever. or H22A swap.
If you still wanna sell it. Get CRX. Fix it up.

The aftermarket support for the v6 is very little which is probably why he wants to trade.
My car is a 96 with 180k and I "hook it up" lol, it's all abotu what you want to do. I wouldn't buy an older car (CRX) and fix it up, that doesn't make a lot of sense.
H22 swaps, turbos, F20B swaps, etc are what most people do to the CD5/7 years of accords. Check out the Accord FAQ.
If you're planning on keeping the car 100% stock then trading for the v6 isn't a horrible idea, but if you're planning on modifying anything, I would stay 4cyl

I don't.... His car may be worth a little more than yours but if he is willing to trade there could be something wrong with his car.
His car wont have much more power than yours, it will get worse gas mileage, and has an less reliable engine imo.
I would stick with yours mainly because you know what you are dealing with. His could have any number of problem he is not disclosing which could be why he want to trade you in the first place.

"i just want it to look nice and ride as durable as possible"
i dont think your accord would last "long" if you RACE it...
just what i think... dont race it if it over 175k mile =] due to i think somthing bad might happen =[ mostly when you want your car to last 2-3 year. But it your choice and if something happen your ether going to swap it or buy a new car... it like giving money away for free(to the person who fix your car and buying parts/swapping).
plus you dont even know your own trim how can you "hook it up"
edit: dont put to much on the outside then people would call you "rice"
=D good luck

94-97 accords seem to be the best accords, of course from what i hear, and im a 97 accord owner and i really do feel the same way. 170k miles is acutally very common for the 94/95 accords. now is the car worth putting money into? well it all depends on how you feel about your car. i mean if you have the money to get another accord with less miles then i would just use that money and give that 94 you got there a very nice tune up. change everything that needs to be changed. right there your accord is pretty much recharged for another 70k miles or so. oil changes is very important and also tranny drain and fills. for auto tranny like you have i would only use "Honda ATF" which you can do yourself but i would recommend you taking it to your nearest honda dealer that has the service center for that. you can do little mods to it like intake system (cold air or short ram) with a good filter like K&N or AEM and Apexi. keep it clean & dry as possible to reduce or prevent rust...etc if you take good care and give your honda the attention it needs then you could have it last more than 2-3 years, and when your ready to move on to a different car you can sell your 94 and get a decent penny for it.
as for the V6 trade that was offered to you. i would say "NO" first off i hear that the 5 gen C27A engines are not as good and lasting as the V4 (f22) engines are. and also gas prices. you live in NY and gas is not cheap trust me. i live in NY too, gas prices here are like elevators. so i would stick with the V4. and also as mentioned above. there are alot more mods available for the f22 v4 engines.
anyways these are our opinions in the end it all matters on what you want to do. but its good to have a piece of mind about it.
good luck man.

At the risk of sounding nick-picky... It's I4, not V4. As in, inline 4. There's no V-configuration of cylinders in Honda's 4-cyl cars.
There are some things you need to keep in mind when thinking about 5th gen V6s. The 5th gen V6 is slower than the 5th gen 4-cyl 5-spd. This is because the difference in power isn't great enough to overcome the difference in weight and difference in gearing. The American public simply needed a V6 to keep the car comparable to the Camry, which was available with a V6 since the '91 model. (The Camry wagon was available with a V6 since the '90 model.) Hell, by the '92 model year, the Camry's V6 had 185 hp and 195 ft-lbs of torque. The most an Accord could offer was only 140 hp.
To sum up, the 5th gen V6 was a way to temporarily sastify the American public. They offered "smoother" performance and a little more torque for daily driving, but that's pretty much it.

I had a 90 accord, nice car, ran great, but had 180k on it and it was auto, and there was a small rust spot..
I WANTED to work it, but it wasnt worth it... now if i had the same car with an h22, with low miles and it was 5 speed, i would have fixed the rust, and did **** to the car...

thanx a lot for all your replies, i read them all very carefully. i will keep the 94 (by the way, it is stick shift, not auto), i will get the normal maintenance for the car, oil cahnges, tune ups, etc. than i will concentrate on makin it look nice, shop for skirt kits, leather seats etc. which brings up another question, this car is also very easy to steal, right? what type of alarm system is best in my situation?

True Honda hearts beat at 4 not 6. I read that somewhere and loved it.

Glad to read you're keeping the 4 banger. I've got a 92 Accord with 150k and another 90 Accord w/ 275k.
Check out http://www.jdmshit.com for your appearance needs. They're inexpensive and high quality. I had a ABS plastic Mugen style lip on my Accord. It was nice, but I'd recommend buying urethane.
For security, I prefer Viper or Clifford alarms. Also check out the extra goodies that can be added to those systems too. I currently run a Viper alarm w/ goodies and LoJack.

yeah def. keep the 4 cyl. if u want to make your car look cleaner, newer i would maybe get your stock lips painted (front, sides, rear) to match your car and side door moldings while your at it. or get a lip kit like i think you meant.
and maybe try to find a set of 94-95 EX alloys. i wouldnt go any more than that until you really know what you want to do with ur car.

94accord, i have the same car as you, Do you have a coupe or four door (mines a coupe). Also mine has the same amount of miles as you have, as you can see were kinda in the same boat, but i plan on keeping mine and i feel you on the thought of should you keep it or get rid of it. the fact of the matter when you get to that high of a mileage get ready to spend money on a lot of repairs, which i am in the process of doing @ the moment, so you're gonna have to make a decision, i saw in your post that you have little cash on hand, but i don't wanna scare you alot of parts gonna start failing on you. So if you want it too look good wash it once a month take your time and clean that baby up inside and out, wax it or get a hand buffer (30 bucks). As for repairs try doing them on your own (will save you a lot of cash)The good news is Your honda will go on like the energizer bunny
Parts shouldn't start failing if you do routine recommended maintenance. Change and check the oil and filter, as well as all your other fluids and filters on a routine basis and you shouldn't have an exorbitant amount of problems. Accords are a good car, and will last you for many many miles.

I'm gonna have to partly disagree with you here. No matter how much preventive maintence you do, your parts will not last forever. Maintence will prolong them but not make them invincible. Batterys drain, alternators wear out, pumps dont pump, hoses crack, spark plugs go bad, brakes wear down etc etc. It aslo depends how much stress you put on there parts. E.G. racing or daily driving
The major parts of your car can and should last a long time. I've seen civics with 350,000 miles and still running strong on the original motor.

No, that was a stopgap engine. It wasn't really a good performer, it was just offered as a V6 because all the otehr competitors (Camry, Taurus, Maxima, etc) had a V6 option. It's very heavy and doesnt make the power worth it. The J32 in the 98+ Accords were the first decent V6's put into an Accord, but the tranny blew chunks.
I'd stick with the car you have, it's easy to swap or boost that engine.

what I know I have also heard this several times before, that that the 94-97 accords have differant engien bays. the v-6 accords, had 3" added to the engien bay to fit the lagger motor. I4s haveing the shorter front, I know that was posted on this honda tech in another thred. Also the f series is a tank take care of it, and it will run forever.

Looking at my post again, I agree. However, the guy I was reposting in response to had told the owner that "alot of parts are gonna start failing", which I disagreed with. Obviously infinite life cannot be expected out of any part, but as far as engine/transmission, Hondas seem to fare well. I guess it just sounded like he was making them out to be piles that cost a lot to keep up, and I disagreed. Point well taken.
