stripped interior
how loud would this be if i stripped the interior? i want to shave as much weight possible but will the noise level drive me crazy as this is gonna be my daily driver also. thanks
Dude, I'd leave it if I was you, my friends civic is gutted and is now incredibly loud inside. No noticable difference in speed either. Just leave it, it is way more comfortable anyway.
WHAT?????
try running a gutted interior with a test pipe in place of the cat. My 6 year old Clarion deck still has enough power to hear the music at 80 mph.
But then again, I'm used to NOISE.

It's noticeably louder. But you don't know how many people ask me if I'm putting in some kind of crazy sub system.
I got my 96 EX w/ B18C1 to weigh 2400 w/ full tank of gas. So I think it's worth it.

My 93 cx was my daily driver and it was gutted. Only dash and seats. No interior trim, carpet, headliner, sound deadening tar, radio, speakers, etc, etc. I had it down to 1960lbs w/ my LS swap in it. I drove it that way for almost 2 years.
It was loud(straight piped w/ a supertrapp muffler), but you get used to it. I used to drive VW bugs, so even a stripped civic still feel luxury to me. lol

I stripped everything from my front seats back, except the carpet (gotta have some resemblence to civility). It is louder, but I scarcely notice it anymore, although people who ride with me often bitch about it. I don't know how much of an increase in performance it really enabled me, but I suppose every little bit helps
Actually you really do kinda feel more in touch with the car. I can hear my rear brakes grabbing, and you can hear as well as feel when you traverse irregularities in the pavement. In fact I removed my power steering pump to heighten my feel for the road (that and the belt was fixing to break anyway)
its not that loud...you get used to it...you kinda feel more one with the car...

i dont fully strip my interior but i take out rear seat, everything from the trunk (thats stereo, spare) and passanger seat.
it shaves about 200 lbs.
i dynamatted my entire car so the road noise is more noticable but still minimal.

I took just the back seats out of my hatch and all i could hear was my n1, road noise, and the brakes grabbing in the rear. How much weight do you guys think you're removing? I really don't think it's all that much. The best way to remove weight is by removing a/c, p/s, sunroof, ect.... True every little bit helps but if it's your daily driver is it really worth it? I know the rear seats in my hatch are light and i don't see any gain by removing them.

Well realy depends on a couple of things
1. what kind of exaust you have luod or mild
2. What kind of tiries (do they make a hum because of the tread pattern)
3.Then kind of roads you drive on
MY Si is gutted to the max I have only two seats and 2 door panels and stock radio other than that nothing and the sound material on the floor is removed as well as carpet. I have a Apexi N1 with the silencer and well on the freeway it is barable but dont try talking on a cell phone above 65mph. Sometimes on long trips i put earplugs in because it buggs me and sometimes if ears are sensative that day ware them.
You can feel a diffference but it is in they eye of the beholder. Woman hate it but I love it and will keep it the way it is
So gutting gets my

Good god, nice job
It will be rather loud but if you only do city driving then it's not too bad. I drove from MS to TX on the highway wth my rear gutted and it was just ridiculously loud. I got sick of it quick.
It is NOT loud with my stripped interior!!!
I believe I may have one of the most stripped interiors for a street car, and when I'm cruising it really isn't much louder than my old full interior 1992 Si hatchback.
I also have one of the loudest exahusts I'm sure - Tanabe Racing Spec - but it actually isn't as loud as the old Tanabe Racing Medallion.
Pics of the strippedness? Sure:

The items delted from my interior are as follows:
1. Tar - removed by crushing dry ice up with a hammer and then chipping off the tar after it froze solid
2. Carpet
3. Rear Seats
4. Headliner
5. door panels
6. Rear plastic panels
7. Firewall mat - big-*** mat that keeps sound out and insulates I guess? I don't care, because I don't miss it
It's behind the dashboard
8. Radio - who needs it?
9. Speakers - see #8
10. Knee bolster car - it's behind the dash too - take out the dash
That's about it as far as the interior is concerned.
I think my car is even more "gutted" than most cars because I don't even have the headliner or any plastic trims. My fiancee' doesn't even mind riding in the car, but then again, she has a 1992 hatchback with a B16A2 swap and Tanabe Racing Medallion exhuast.
If I had a wuiet exhaust then the car would be totally civicl in terms of noise. If you run inner fender linings, then rocks/debris up front aren't a biggie, and in the rear it's not as bad as you would think either.
Highway road noise isn't bad, unless you have noisy-*** tires, but mine aren't too bad.
The only drawbacks I can see about a gutted interior is the cleanliness factor. Think about how long the car has had to collect dirt, grime, candy wrappers, food, melted crap, etc. under all that interior stuff.
Get some good degreaser and go to work!
I went ahead and painted all of mine when the car went for a full color change - the inside is now just as shiny as the outside, but this also means I have to keep the inside clean too - damp wipe-downs with my Absorber do the trick quite nicely though.
Overall, I love my stripped hatchback. It also helps to have a CX model too, and whn you go from an Si hatch to a CX that's stripped the difference is freaking insane.
Anyways, if you have any specific Q's about the stripping process feel free to ask here.

That gooey crap on your doors will come off with a nice heat gun and some patience.
I just heated it up until the goo turned into ashes and just fell off!

i stripped my interior as well, headliner, tar and all platics and carpet, no seats no stereo, no passengers.....and yes i did feel the power gain, just think of this, im a 98 civic dx, non vtec poop engine, racing ex's and Si's who wins? actually i do.....when an SI weighs 2600lbs without driver(local friend of mine) even with truck tar removed and rear bumper support. My cars weighs in at just over 1900 and i still have a few things to take off.....yes its loud sometimes, is it bad, no you get used to it, i think i talk really loud now too, and i have to ask people to say things twice alot, but thats because im around shop tools all day....
its all about SACRIFICES.....you want to go faster than the other guy with the I/H/E STRIP IT
trust me getting rid of 25 lbs is just like adding 3 hp.....theres some crazy calculations on this that i dont remember....but its true less weight faster,
just removing the passenger and rear seats and all brackets is like 60-80lbs

is taking PS off worth it? is AC worth it? Hard? firewall heavy? how would i go about doing all this? take out dash? simple ratchets? what did you do? just spray all the washer out?? how much weight did it save?
WTF is the use in stripping a car unless it's a track only car? as a dialy driver..i don't see the point at all. do you peole honestly think the pros outweigh the cons? i KNOW they don't. you seriously don't gain much unless you're gonna stip the *entire* a/c system. i had stripped car for almost a year while i was redoing my interior in white vinyl, and it sucks butt. you close the door and all you hear is a tinny bean can sound. you hear the windows creaking in the window channels. you hear every rock, bump...everything in the ground. you hear the springs squeaking in the perches. you hear the gas sloshing around in the gas tank. and you know what? other than being louder i really don't think you gain much in the performance department. then you pull up next to a Camaro or a Mustang with full interior, a/c, stereo, everything...and you realize you gained a whole .1 of a second in your 1/4mile time, have no tunes to roll to, and you're sweating and sticking to your seat in the 105 degree, humid as Hell itself Texas temperature. WOW. at least you have that racecar look!
Bring on the flames.
