Default JDM Final Drive w/GSR Tranny

Has anyone done this? Any impressions? I'm sorta stuck in what to do. I don't have enough money for another tranny right now and i can't swap. I'd like to keep my stock GSR tranny because if some thing ever happens with the second one i buy, i'd like to have something to go back on. Is this a worthy upgrade? The GSR gearing is so long it seems like my car revs so slow in all the gears except 1 and 2.

AVOL,

what the hell are you talking about? "2nd gear sucks"? 2nd is ten times better than 1st, and the first gear that actually gets the car going fast. i agree that 3rd is great, but 2nd definitely doesn't "suck"

I have the JDM final drive in my GSR (stock tranny... well, with ACT HDSS clutch, Spoon flywheel, Quaife LSD) and it definitely makes a big difference, especially in 1st and 2nd. On the highway the higher revs make it unnecessary to downshift to pass, but also cut highway mpg by a mile or two.

Bert: with the new final drive in, do you still land on 5500 rpm after your 1-2 shift? You got any video clips of your tach while doing a run?

No, I don't have any vids but rr2 is right, the rpm are ~10% higher at a given speed in each gear. If you want I can see where I land on the 1-2 shift, but I doubt there is much of a difference (if any at all.) Also, I shift at 9k which futher complicates things. At any rate, I get a second or two of wheelspin (and a good amount of torque steer) on the 1-2 shift, so I'm usually concentrating controlling the car (and not looking at the tach.)

ummmm 2nd gear does suck ALOT. Its way too long. I was thinking just do a longer first, but I just went ITR tranny instead.

yeah 2cnd is definatedly the main problem with the GSR tranny, 1st is the same as the si and itr but second is longer where if you had an si or itr youd land right above 6k but now you land at 5500 and it bogs a bit my oppinion of adding a final drive to the gsr is like this: first gear will be shorter than an ITR and from second on up it will be pretty similar, but youre paying at least 500 for the FD and plenny for the install while you can sell your gsr and buy an Si and break close to even, so i wouldnt pay that much just to get a shorter 1st.

Im guessing they made the second gear long, because they wanted the GSR to do 60 MPH in second gear. That way when the media test drove the GSRs they only have to shift one time to get a 0-60 time. I've heard of other car companies doing that

I think that other fella brought up a good point. The FD set is like 350 dollars, plus hella install because you have to take the shaft out. If you got an Si tranny, you just have to do the tranny swap (somewhat easy and cheap) and you're done. Alot of places you can do an even trade with GSR <> Si Trannies. Just find a shop that builds LS/B20/VTECs, because they are most likely to have Si trannies laying around and like GSR trannies. But be careful which si tranny they try to give you!!
