Default Can you remove PS completely from 4th Gen?

92 Accord LX Sedan / non-ABS / AT

I just had my oil pan gasket replaced and saw that my PS Rack has a leak. Honda wants $957 (parts/labor) + $70 (alignment).

I looked up the part it self on http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com and it's $797.

Is it possible to remove all of the PS components entirely? I don't know at this point what all else is tied together with the PS Rack with the rest of the steering/suspension on the Accord (I'm an old Civic nut). I'd save $200 and do the work myself, but I can't afford the part at this point.

Thanks for any help HT-ers.

where is it leaking from?

You could try the PS removal that is shown in the Accord FAQ (look towards the bottom of the Suspension section for the links). There is also a couple thread in the Accord forum about this but the one in the FAQ shows it being done on a ITR.

Basically they removed everything but the rack, looped a couple lines, t'd into another line and added a breather and reservoir to add fluid to the rack and keep it lubricated.

I've also heard of people packing the rack with grease to keep it lubricated but it's been dibated that will not allow the rack to move free enough.

Passenger side. I'm told it can't be fixed, I have to replace the whole rack. It's filling the rubber boot and slowly dripping out the hole for air.

So I can't remove the rack?...I now assume it's a part that has to be on the car no matter what.

I read a lot of the FAQ except the ITR area. I'll get to it next. Thanks for the response.

I just read the ITR section and it looks do-able on the Accord.

But I just started looking at remanufactured PS Racks.

I found 3 company's so far...

CVC $146 w/ $63 core
Maval $232 w/ $150 core
A1 Cardone $197 w/ 125 core

Are any of these brands better than the other? The brand I was looking for was TRW, but couldn't find the PS Rack for my Accord. These prices are in my range to fix the problem and not ignore it.

no, the rack can be removed. I was just saying that they removed everything PS from the car except the rack for this mod. Sorry if I confused you.
