Default Is it worth building a SOHC head?

I was thinking of building this d16 head for fun/instructional use and I was wondering how much it really costs to do headwork, I don't really know much about it, also how much is a flow bench, I read thats really important.

not to be so analitic but you said you were doin it for fun. so if thats all your doin it for the its gotta be worth it to you. do you plan on rebuildin it stock or with a little performance?

flow benches are from about $4000 on up to $12,000 or more. i want one also though.. its on the list.

there is a video around here of some kid porting the h3ll out of an a6 head, no flow bench, and rips a couple 9000rpm pulls. he obviously didnt care much about the engine to build it right, but the sound it makes is ungodly.

if you are doing it for fun, or to kill the d before the b swap or something, you dont need a flow bench.. but if its your daily driver, then i suggest just taking it to a machine shop that has a flow bench, and tell them to make it flow better.

JG engine dynamics sells d series head kits that you could buy and have installed at a machine shop that will help your d breath better.

my friend paid about $2k for a port and valve job on his. head work deffinetly is not cheap.. but if you are going to get it done, send your head to JG.. they are the best ones i know of for this kind of work.

Jesus, I think i'll just guess and eyeball it LOL is there any damage if there is uneven flow between the cylinders?

* Square head by milling the deck parallel to the camshaft bores.
* Mill chamber reliefs around each valve seat.
* Custom radius/discrete valve job. Larger than stock seats at no additional charge. Seat heights set to within .001".
* Machine valve faces and back-angles (used or factory valves), or indicate faces and machine as necessary (new aftermarket valves).
* Rework port bowls and blend into valve seats to achieve desired flow characteristics.
* Blend and smooth combustion chambers.
* Match intake entries and exhaust port exits to achieve proper port match and mismatch for reversion control.
* CC and mill head to achieve proper compression ratio.
* Assemble with new OE valve seals and valves and set up springs to correct pressures/heights for camshaft/RPM application.
* Conversion of VTEC heads to fit non-VTEC blocks at no additional charge.
* CNC chamber rework to match larger bore diameters adds $100.00

2. Full-Ported Package D Series Honda $895.00 All Other Applications $1095.00
* Includes everything in the Basic Porting Package.
* Valve seat height adjustment for proper valve to valve clearance with maximum valve diameters.
* Full combustion chamber rework
* Full intake and exhaust port rework to optimize flow and port volume for specific engine application.
* Ports spot flowed to verify results.
* CNC chamber rework to match larger bore diameters adds $100.00.

3. Professional Full-Ported Package $1450.00
* Includes everything from the full-ported package.
* Custom port shaping for most extreme applications.
* Custom Valvetrain Machining.

D16 heads are worth building up all motor wise if you match it with the right camshaft.
I'm assuming you are doing all motor since you didnt mention much about doing more to the engine and turbo.

Turbo applications are good too. We have 2 customers here on HT that made over 400hp on heads we built for them.

depends on who does it, but usually 2-4 weeks. We're at about 2 weeks on our turn around.
