So I am pretty sure my rack and pinion is leaking and needs to be replaced. However, I currently do not have the $$$ to perform the proper repairs and so I need a temporary stop-gap stop-leak addititve to use.

Normally, I'd just go buy a bottle of prestone or Lucas and dump in the PS reservoir (in my trucks). But alas, this is a 1987 Honda Accord LXi, and they take the special kind of PS fluid. Is there any compatible additive that I can use? I want to make sure that I do not put anything harmful into the system.

Also, what is the PS fluid based off of? Petroleum based? Mineral Based? Synthetic? Other?

additive isnt going to do much.

it's a pressurized system(hydralic btw), it will find the smallest holes and jizz juice out.

if the addictive is sticky enough to clog the hole, i am not sure how well it will lube the system, you might fix the leak now, but you are asking your pump to take a hike

 

You're reply is not answering the question. The stop-leaks have worked temporary on other automobiles in the past. And that is all I am looking for. I need a temporary solution until I can perform a proper repair.

In the past, stop-leaks have worked for me with no adverse effects.

So moving on, are any off the shelf stop-leaks compatible with honda steering systems?

I think Lucas is "compatible" with all makes... but I wouldn't trust it... How long do you plan on using a stop leak for? If it does actually slow the leak decently, I'd imagine it would expletive up the pump after awhile. Find a yard nearby and see if you can get your parts at a reasonable price... if you think you're paying too much at a junkyard... you are. Just FYI.

If you're really set on atleast trying a temporary fix, head down to your local auto parts store, and ask what they've got on hand that will work in your car. There are so many brands of this crap floating around that a list probably would be a waste of time to compile.

 

Honda P/S fluid is an animal of a different kind.
there is a "Gunk" brand sealer/conditioner that is compatible with the honda system
I'm not going to say it will fix your leak, I've never used it.
