88-91 civic dx and si tranny = same gearing?
Ran across this page and its saying the gearing of the 88-91 dx and si trannies are the same, except for the final drive? Is this true?

I'm trying to find a better tranny for my d16z6 crx, because the hf tranny i'm running now, sucks......

that is true - gears 1 thru 5 are the same in the DX and the Si - the only difference is in the Final Drive (differential) gearing which is 4.25:1 on the Si and 3.88:1 on the DX
how big of a difference is that final drive gonna make? If its not a huge diff, then i'll just settle for a local dx tranny.
you will be around 3700-3900 rpm at 80 mph I noticed a deff difference between my dx at 80mph and the si trans with the si tranny your already higher in the rpms making it easier to get up and go and pass compared to the dx trans
http://crx.honda-perf.org/math/index.html from the faq up top you can see better the differences between the transmissions

I agree I had a dx tranny then I got an si and the only diffrence is the final drive.
Very nice on the highway while trying to get in and out of traffic, it will be nice with your z6 I wish I had my si tranny with my mini-me.

my old 90 si had a dx tranny and my current 89 si has an si tranny all i gotta say is i feel a slight diffrence with my 89 it accelerates a lil quicker and i go thru my gears faster my old 90 was a cow compard too my 89 and i think it was all about the trannys.

Well a real si trans should be a SL3 and the dx is just a L3 most civic's came with L3 but the SL3 is what your lookin for if not just put a NEW clutch WITH a LIGHTWEIGHTFLYWHEEL and smiles for DAYS...MOE@HYPER16VALVE...
With my turboed zc, from the dx to the si there was a huge difference! I will be one to tell you that this is a very good investment and if you are already goin to spend that much might as well get the si!

I went from an HF tranny to an Si tranny and nearly crapped my pants.

So anybody ever just switched the final drive on the DX to the Si one?? I don't know what the price on parts would be but it is a pain to find a GOOD Si tranny. anybody ever swapped the final drive over??? My buddy works at Honda so I would get cost on any parts
i think if you make enough power then the tranny wont matter too much, id rather have lower rpms on the highway. but i guess it all matters on how you drive. iv read that its better to have a dx rather then an si tranny if your boosted. iv got a dx with a d15b2 mpfi and its fast enough for now. i do alot of highway driving and im at 4grand going 140km/h and i wish i coudl get the rpms lower then that to save gas.

First off, the notion that longer gearing is better is a myth. Longer gears = slower acceleration = slower over all.
Disproval of said theory
Also, on the subject of gas mileage, gearing really doesn't have that much of an affect, throttle position matters more. I pulled 38mpg out of my Z6 cruising at 80mph going to NC.

the bottom line is that trannies should be matched to the engine and desired driving conditions/performance
that being said, hondas almost always accelerate better with a shorter-geared tranny, except when traction becomes an issue (which is where the longer-gearing for forced induction "myth" apparently came about -- but, in some conditions, the longer final drive may be better for what the driver wants out of the car)
and throttle position combined with rpm's are the main determinants of fuel consumption, afaik

i have all three trannys and i dont like the hf i am going to put my si on in the next week. I also had a 9 pound flywheel with the hf what a mistake my engine was a y8 low milage and no vtec i couldnt get over 90 - 95 mph holy ****. it sucks.
