Default NPR Pistons & Rings vs OEM Honda Pistons & Rings.. and difference?

alright.. so im building an LS/VTEC. B16 Head, B18b Block.

I'm looking at some P30 pistons. I can get OEM Honda OS P30 Pistons and Rings for $260 shipped.

I can get the NPR OS P30 Pistons and Rings from Ebay for $150 shipped.

I am on a budget and the NPR set would save me some money and allow me to get the bore and hone on the block done sooner.

I have talked to a few people who have used both, and they say they are identical pistons except for the finish. The OEM finish is cleaner and smoother. Also, they noticed that the NPR were a little louder in the engine than the OEM ones. He said they make a little noise like normal aftermarket pistons (JE, SRP, etc..) do.

Am I gonna notice any real performance issue between the pistons..

Anyone with experience with NPR or TopLine Pistons and rings, please let me know how they are and how well they hold up.

Here is a link to the NPR pistons on Ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...d=1,1

Thanks.

I never have and never will use 'nippon racing products'...too 'cheap' of a product to put into my engine(s)
If it comes down to it, the pistons I'd consider but not the piston rings.

Hastings piston rings/OEM Honda > all other brands

Hasting does not make pistons, but they are paired up with Safety pistons. Honda uses Riken piston rings if I recall.

I'm using them in my engine. I'm at 5200 miles and making the power in my signature. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

like it was said, hastings only makes rings that I know of, but a lot of the high end engine's I've seen and read about mostly use OEM honda or Hasting's piston rings

I might just go with the NPR Pistons and rings unless I can get a little more money. I don't see how they can be that much different. But then again, they could be ****.

Nippon is an OEM supplier. There is nothing wrong with thier products, and yes I have used them with good results. I've even reccomended them to a few "customers" whom I have built engines for. Yet to have any issues.

I have Npr 81.5 mm ctr pistons and rings in my 12.5:1 b16a and they are fine i have almost 3000 miles on the motor and so far so good, I made the choice based on my budget and it has yet to come back and kick me in the *** so i say go w/the npr p30 pistons

You don't honestly expect a built engine to last that long, do you?

lol no not that long, but definitely moren than 5200 miles. I would like to see it last 50-100,000 miles. I mean, it should, if its built right, why shouldnt it last like anything else?

That's just my personal experience. There are a lot of people who use these pistons and a lot who have over 20k miles on them. I've yet to read any bad reviews of these guys. It just depends on how much power you want to make. If you're even considering OEM Honda piston and rings for $300, why not go with Nippon for $150-180?

My avatar's my block with Nippon P28s in it.

well i found OEM OS P30 pistons and rings for $260 shipped. But that $110 i save by buying the NPR set could be used to have my block bored and honed. But then again, for an extra $110 i get the comfort of having OEM Honda pistons.

I think im just gonna get them.. its not that much extra money.

OEM, CP, Wiseco

i wont use anything else

Buy OEM pistons or the NPR/ROck/Topline pistons, but BUY A SET OF OEM RINGS!

Hastings/JE/Nippon i have had smoking issues with. they use low tension oil control rings .

I use oem all the time, if you seat the rings right they are tough to beat. But recently, I took apart a b16a that had been rebuilt with rs machine 81.5mm b16a pistons...two cylinders had broken ring lands . Stock b16a.

Supposedly, Nippon fixed the broken ring land issue by moving the top compression ring down a little (I don't remember how much and I can't find the post).

I'm using the NPR rings and don't have any blowby issues. So why do these rings suck so badly? Nobody's been able to give an answer other than "they aren't OEM or big brand name". These pistons and rings seem to be working alright in my engine and it's my first build.

KiDD knows whats up...

I have 12k miles on my Topline ITR pistons, and NPR ring combo, broken in like normal...then pounded on....they have seen a few dyno pulls, and occasional street pulls to 9500, and have given me nothing but joy...they are a nice alternative to OEM on a budget build....my "Built" gsr was less than $1500 for new everything, since i already had the block, but that was pistons, rings, rods, bearings, machine work, oil pump(itr OEM), water pump oem, etc...and arp head studs

and i run 175whp and 129trq, not stupendous numbers, but daily, reliable, and loud, and that is untuned
