Damn B&M Shifter!
I have a 97 GSR, and I have a B&M "The Edge" "****" shifter. This damn thing rattles like hell, and I cannot figure out why. It is not from my metal ****, and it is not the linkage hitting the exhaust, and I do not have a bad tranny. Any Ideas? Thanks guys.
from what i've heard from different people is that they rattle. It's the shifter it'self, nothing you can do about it, short of taking it out. I have one in my Civic, and it rattles on Aluminum bushings, Poly Urethane bushings, or the regular rubber bushings...

check where the through-bolt goes thru the bottom of the shifter. Is there ANY freeplay at all? if so it can rattle. I put washers and a lock washer on my through--bolt to keep everything tight. My shifter has a metal bearing in the bottom, w/ spacers on each side, so I can tighten the bolt as much as I want to and the shifter will still move just the same.
It's an AutoZone shifter BTW, and no, mine will not break.

i had a b&m for like 4 yrs it ratteled bad
i even talked to the guys at b&m about it then i just gave up
and kept my hand on it all the time.so i just got a good deal on a used solo
i heard solo was the bomb so i put it in and its sits like 2 inches taller than the b&m
i like the bend but the linkage rubs on the resonator in my bolt up apexi n1
makin it hard to shift

my B&M Edge rattles like hell too, i thought about getting another one but i love the feal of the B&M so i just deal with the rattling and ive gotten used to it that now i dont notice it that much anymore
I had the solo short shifter in mine, and it worked great. Shifting was hard about after a week, it somehow got a bit lose and it was perfect. the height was about 1 inch shorter then stock and the throw was way shorter. Good shifter overall for the price that I paid.
They may be a bit cheaper here cuz they are made right here in Quebec, Canada.

You know, I have exactly the same problem with the B&M "Pro Edge" (drives my wife absolutely crazy on long trips).
Here's the thing, though- it DIDN'T rattle when it was first put on.
That's why I'm wondering if there's a solution having to do with tightening.

i wanted to get a shifter off of ebay...it was oly 17.99 a gun metal short shifter...but peeps were like it mite break on you ? is that true? anyone have experience with the cheap short shifters on ebay? i mean its a goood friggiin deal...i jus wanna know if its worth buyin it...
Here's the solution: tighten the bolt and nut combo that connects the change rod and the shifter itself REALLY tight. It will be harder to shift at first, but after a while, it will get easier to shift. When I first put mine in, it rattled a little. I then went back and re-tightened that bolt and locknut and I've gone rattle free for almost 1 1/2 years already. Eventually, it will gradually loosen to the point where it will rattle again (mine's showing signs of rattling again) and you will also notice a bit of shifter play while in neutral or any gear. Also, make sure to use the bushings that come with the B&M kit and make sure to install them in the CORRECT places. My friend used the stock ones along with some misc. washers and it rattles like there's no tomorrow. Again, the key is REALLY tight. Good luck.
[EDIT]If the rattling is from the shifter touching an aftermarket exhaust, there's nothing you can do[/EDIT]

Solve that problem by getting a skunk2 short shifter. Definetly quality, remember you always get what you pay for. I got a deal w/ mine, $112 which included shipping from http://www.jdmhondaparts.com. Hope this helps.....

Some shifters require you to remove the bearing from the bottom of the stock shifter and install it into the new short shifter. IMHO this design is crap. Other shifters come with a new metal bearing, along with a couple of spacers, which will allow you to tighten the bolt as tight as you can, and it will not affect the feel of the shifter. My AutoZone shifter is designed this way, it's been great no problems since day 1 after installing it 9 months ago.
