Default d16y7 Surging idle 1200-2000rpm(unplug IAC-1500rpm flat)

Summary- put a used d16y7 (bought through Advanced Autoparts) into a 97 DX which through a rod in its orignial y7. Did it for a guy I work with to help him out. Bookstores don't pay crap. Car has 180K on it.

Did a timing belt/water pump change on it before dropping it in.The marks line up fine when I manually rotate the crank. Can't seem to get acurate timing light ready with the surging. (last time checked-open to the idea timing off it these symptons seem like it could be)

When the car starts it idles about 1100 for a few seconds then jumps from 2000rpm to 1200ishrpms and just sits there going up and down.

When I unplug the IAC the idle sits right at 1500rpms.

The sensors came already on the newer enigne, harness from the car, the MAP sensor is from the original engine but no leak there checked.

Dist. firing order- clockwise starting at top left 1342.

To get the RPMs been using my timing light, it has a digital display RPM/advance read out.

Any ideas? Thanks

take off your intake pipe right at the throttle body

there is a small hole inside the TB right before the throttle plate, it lets air into the engine at idle when the throttle is closed

cover the hole with your finger, it should stop the surging and almost die, if it does this then you need to either clean or replace yuor IACV

Well new news. Looking like the timing is off by one tooth. Seem to have an issue with every time I get it lined up, and rotate the crank, there is so much slack from the cam to the crank that it allows the crank to move enough to equal about 1-2 teeth on the cam.

Tried re tensioning the belt but it always ends up with the same amount of being off.

The belt is brand new, from Advanced Auto Parts Part# 95224. Wasn't my buy, the car owner provided the new belt.
