So I have a VDO Pyrometer and the stinger (or sender whatever you want to call it but its the piece that goes into the exhaust) went bad. Well I have checked around and got mixed answers if they were universal. They are designed to be replaced but I need to know if another one would work the same as a VDO one. I went to a local diesel parts store and they have universal ones that look identical to my VDO one and its about half the price. I am assuming if they sell universal ones and are not brand biased that they all should be. Any thoughts on this guys or experiences. Thanks
Yes, as long as you get the correct one. Thermocouples can come in K, J, E, B, R S, T, etc.
Most of them are K type for EGT type stuff. K type are cheap, and have decent sensitivty and temperature ranges.
yes the 2 coloured wires as well as the shielding wire will identify the type..
You have Red and white im presuming? Red being the negative (red is always negative using our standards)..
What is the colour of the other wire i can tell you what kind you need.
IMPORTANT also.. when reconnecting your new prope (thermocouple) you MUST not solder the connections.. Or use copper wire.. this will cause another joint of disimilar metal and will create a mV and throw off your reading.. (if you know how they work you will understand) you must use the proper thermocouple wire and thermocouple connectors.. and keep the polarity proper

Mine is red and yellow and so is the one I looked at purchasing at the diesel shop. That is awesome and is gonna save me a **** load of money, not to mention I have a good source to get them at now. Cool thing is from the stinger there is about 6in of wire and then you actually bolt it to the rest of the harness. It has ring terminals and these little nuts and bolts, really trick and thats how I could tell it was designed to be replaced need be.
